Stupid question: why do you guys change your names? I get it if someone gets married, but why else?

My last name is so freaking long and complicated. It’s hard to have it in the States, I’m opting to change it to my mother’s maiden name

My Oath ceremony was at 10AM in the Milwaukee Federal courthouse. We had 52 applicants from 27 countries! They lined the applicants up and we all had to check in with a couple people and turn in our green cards, then everyone had to enter the courtroom. So, the ceremony itself did not start until about 10:50. They had limited seating for the friends and families, and no one was allowed to stand, so they also had an "overflow room" where the rest of the guests could watch the ceremony live. My coworkers also watched the ceremony at work through the provided youtube link.

Everybody was given their certificates by an USCIS representative after the ceremony, but the 15 people who have changed their names (me included) did not get the name change certificate; we were told that those will be mailed out within 2-3 weeks.

We were pretty much done by 11:30. We stayed behind for a bit to take pictures in the courtroom and with the big American flag.

When I went to work the next day, my coworkers had my desk decorated with silly jokes about being an American and we had an office party with some donuts, an apple pie, a charcuterie board made out to look like an American flag, and some taco dip, obvs 😁 It was so touching! 😍

Congrats to you !! You have a good work family !!

Well, well a process I began in 2018 with an I-129 petition has come to and end today May 13, 2024 with a Naturalization ceremony in Philadelphia. It was a great learning experience, which I believe it’s been for all of us VJers. The waiting, the reading, the research we all did when not sure how to answer any of the many questions of the many forms we filled on each stage of the process will allow us to help the ones that come behind us. Because that’s what we do as Americans help each other and the ones that need our help.

Thanks to all VJ members that helped and continue helping those at the beginning of the VISA JOURNEY. It’s great to find you guys.

All the best for everybody and the most important thing PATIENCE, A LOT OF PATIENCE

VMB

Congratulations to you !

I use my English name since my legal name is a bit awkward to pronounce and I was too self-conscious when I was younger...

Unfortunately the new name sticks with me professionally and it has caused a lot of headache (why isn't XXX in the review system? Why do I get a request from this stranger). Too much confusion already so I'd like to keep things siimple.

Because some places only hold a few Oath ceremonies a year once they accumulate enough people

Our citizenship interview is next Thursday. So far, we haven't received any notification indicating it's going to be a combo interview (I-751 and N-400). Does USCIS typically notify about combo interviews, or should we just go expecting it to be one?

If you have a pending I-751, prepare for a combo.  Our local office notified us only 2 days prior to wife's N-400 interview that I was required to be there for a combo.  Of course, I had been preparing for a combo all along.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Email from the Dallas Office.  I had also included a request letter for a combo with the N-400 application.

Nice. Hopefully, we'll receive some kind of notification too. Regardless, both of us will be going. Our interview is in Baltimore. Thank you :)

Good luck.  Being the US citizen spouse, this was my first USCIS interview...LOL.  But, the N-400 process was the easiest part of wife's immigration.
