@Laure&Colin I just left the building. Application recommended for approval and waiting for ceremony date.
last interview of the day so the office was empty.
Seemed like the officer was ready to go home so our interview lasted less than 5 min.

Congrats!!

I added your update to the tracker above. 4 approvals already for February filers!

For naturalization through marriage, are spouses required to be at the interview?

Not necessarily required but recommended if your I-751 is still pending. Some people who had combo interviews received a message from their field office just days before requesting that the spouse come as well.

Highly recommended, even if I-751 is approved. Especially recommended if I-751 is still pending.

You're applying based on marriage and having spouse come with you proves marriage is going well. Also, IOs occasionally ask USC questions.

My wife did not go with me. I don't think it is necessary. We already interviewed together before I got my 10-year GC.

Also, the officer did not ask for any documentation other than the GC, DL, Passport, not even my wife's original birth certificate, but they probably had that information on file from the GC process. I did submit a lot of additional evidence like bank statements, mortgage, car docs, insurance, credit card statements, etc with the online application.

Will see how it goes.

Some people get hard time when spouse is not present. Looks like not in your case.

In general, just because you had approval before doesn't mean effortless approval in the next stage of immigration. The system is designed to re-examine any previous decisions when granting new immigration benefit.

If the interviewing officer has any questions about your marital union, the best remedy would be for the spouse to be there.  Why take a chance on delaying the process.  It just makes sense for the US spouse to attend.

Chapter 2 - Marriage and Marital Union for Naturalization | USCIS

"In general, all naturalization applicants filing on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen must continue to be the spouse of a U.S. citizen from the time of filing the naturalization application until the applicant takes the Oath of Allegiance."

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

No reply yet. At this point, I really hope to have the interview on August 16, I would have the perfect excuse to be in San Antonio: the concert of Journey + Def Leppard. That would be awesome if they can be the same day :D

I guess the difference is the conditions. I didn’t have any conditions on my GC, as we moved to the US after we were already married for over two years. Now the only question is that you are still married, so you can apply based on the 3-year rule.  Thats luckily not a topic for us since we both still love each other very much and we have always lived together at the same addresses and always moved together, filed taxes together, share everything from finances and bank accounts to beds 😉

Without conditions my wife was not even invited to the interview and would have to wait outside in the waiting room. If however, you have conditions, you still need to have these removed.

Having your spouse puts a moral pressure on IO to decide favourably, based on what I read on VJ and heard from lawyers:

https://www.avvo.com/legal-answers/marriage-based-citizenship-do-i-have-to-accompany--3147956.html

I read somewhere of rare cases when conditions were already removed but spouse was asked few questions as part of N-400 under 3 year rule. I will post links if I find it.

It's pretty much like with evidence. If you bring a lot with you, nobody asks for it. If you bring little or none - you get RFE.

Bringing spouse to 3 year rule N-400 is not mandatory, but helps to get approval easier even if spouse is just sitting in the waiting area.

Case Filed 02/07 . No update after that. Estimated time went from 6 months to 4 months to 5 months to 7 months.

Does this mean someone working on the file ?

I don't think so. I think it's only based on average processing times. Mine went from 5 back to 6 a couple weeks ago, I still got my interview date this week. I really wouldn't read too much into these estimates...

@Tommy2000 on track to be the 1st naturalized citizen in our February group 👀
