Since the I751 has already been approved you won't be interviewed for that application, it's done. However they could still ask you some questions about your marriage, even though you're applying under the 5-year rule, like they did for me. Just be ready to answer any question and bring some evidence of your continuing marriage (lease/house title in both your names, kids birth certificates, tax transcripts showing you filed jointly, etc.) Anything key document you used for your I751 but you probably don't need a ton.

Can you tell me what questions did they ask you about your marriage please? Thank you

Are you still married? Did your husband come with you on your last international trip? Have you ever lived apart? Do you own a car together? Do you own a home or rent together? At this point I offered to show him a copy of our lease with both our names on it, and he said yes show me.

Not by itself. You'll have to update trips list at the interview. Of course, if you barely have required physical presence and this trips makes it to below the mimimum, this may become an issue.

I traveled in March for a short trip. I told the interviewer the wrong month because I was sleep deprived (should've been March rather than April) but she didn't question it further. Worth noting the dates down

They have the actual dates in front of them, the IO knows in your case there was no malice, and rather just human error!

For my interview under 5-yr rule, I am taking:

  • 5 years worth of Tax Transcripts
  • Residential lease
  • Driver's license
  • Passport
  • Green Card

Should I take anything else with me? I'm single, never married, no children. I uploaded my Mother's Cert of Naturalization to the USCIS portal, but I don't have that original with me. I know the letter says to bring originals of whatever you uploaded to the interview.

Also, does anyone know if the Chicago FO allows a guest? My best friend would like to join me for moral support and wait in the waiting area obviously.

Organizing our documents to take to my interview on Thursday. Planning for a combo interview since I have a pending I-751 and applied under the 3-year rule. Am I missing anything?

  • Immigrant spouse birth certificate (plus copy), green card, and passport
  • US citizen spouse birth certificate and passport (plus copy of both)
  • Marriage certificate, plus certified copy
  • Tax transcripts 2020-2022; 2023 we filed for an extension and haven't filed it yet so I'm taking the confirmation email and hoping for the best
  • Leases for the entire time we've been married to show we're living together
  • Joint finances: we only opened a joint checking last year but taking monthly statements for that
  • Lots of photos
  • Random stuff like joint renter's insurance, car insurance with both our names, etc.

Anything I'm forgetting?

Hello all!

I had my interview today at 10:30 am in NYC at 26 Federal Plaza. I arrived 45 minutes early, because I was nervous and I don’t trust morning train traffic😏 I went through the security check downstairs, went up to the 9th floor according to my invitation letter, and checked in there but had to go back to 4th floor for the interview. So I was glad that I had arrived before the actual appointment time. There were about 25 other people already in the waiting room, and I went to the window and checked in again (gave them the green paper that I received from the 9th floor). Then I waited in there for about half an hour. I brought my flashcards with civic test questions and was reviewing them while I waited. Then I got called at about 10:35am. My officer was a very serious African-American lady and she would not smile or have any small talk with me. First she had me swear to say the truth and took my fingerprints, then she asked me for my passport, id and a green card. Then she asked me civic test questions, I remember just these: Two National holidays? How many voting members in the House of Representatives? WHo is the governor of your state? Why there are 13 stripes on a flag? What is the one freedom from the First amendment? And then she asked me to read the sentence from the tablet: When is the Thanksgiving day? And to write with my finger on a tablet: Thanksgiving is in November. After that she reviewed my whole immigration history. She was asking how I became a permanent resident. She asked if I work and where, and where and when I worked previously (for the last 3 years) and where I went to school within these 3 years. She asked me where I lived and when and where we lived together with my ex husband. She asked if I am still married, and I said that yes and that I am in the process of divorce and could not do it earlier because of financial hardship, and she said that that is understandable. She asked about my travel abroad and for how many days I was there. At the end she asked me to verify my current address and a phone number, and how I understand the Oath of allegiance. Then there were those “No” questions and some of the “Yes” questions.

I seem to answer every question okay.

At the end she made me sign biographic info on the tablet and then the oath of allegiance on a tablet. Then she said that she will recommend my case for approval, and that I will get an Oath ceremony invitation in mail. After that she smiled finally! 😄

For the documents, I brought 4 huge binders with me, taxes for last 4 years, my previous approved petitions, and more stuff, that was absolutely not needed, because all she asked me was my passport, my id, and my green card.

In about an hour my case status changed to Oath invitation was mailed, and I saw a document online: It is scheduled for June 13th, at 2 pm!

I can’t believe it is over, I am so happy!

Good luck to all!

congrats

My wife tested me on the 100 questions. It was all right until I said "The star-sprinkled banner".

Seriously, how many times did you use the word "spangled" in your life?

🙂

I once said "scar-mangled" banner and my husband was like are you okay? 😆

No issue at all, the officer will ask you if you traveled since submitting your application, and you'll just have to give them the dates and destinations.

Are you on the same health insurance plan? That's one thing the officer asked me that I forgot to mention in a previous post. If yes bring proof. Another thing he asked is if we owned a car together. Bring car title if you do.

Otherwise, evidence you are each other's beneficiaries for retirement accounts and life insurance obtained through your employer.

No, I wanted to get into my husband's insurance b/c he has good benefits from a state job but he forgot to tell me during open enrollment lol... Our cars are owned separately too but he did guarantee my student loans so I'll take some proof of that as well.

I'll also print the beneficiary stuff. When I went in for my green card interview I was so on top of it and had everything so neatly organized, this time I can barely be bothered to print and organize everything I already submitted online lol... But I know I should. Thanks for the suggestions!
