Question about CR1 border crossing

Hello! 

 

I recently received my CR1 spousal visa and I am wondering if:

1. I can cross the land border from Canada to the U.S.?

2. Can I come back to Canada for a brief time (2-4 weeks) before moving fully to organize my stuff before I move for good? Am I allowed to travel before the green card comes in through the mail?

Just a slight add for your second question.  When you enter the US using your spousal visa and CBP endorses it with an immigration stamp, it will serve as a temporary green card until your actual GC arrives.  That wording should be printed on the bottom of your visa.

 

As to 1, yes, any legal border crossing can be used.

Thanks for your help, yesterday I came across this post. I wonder if the reason they got rejected was because they intended to stay in Canada for sometime?

 

I am not sure if I should introduce risk to save some time in terms of the SSN processing.

Yes, the story imbedded in that thread was a major soap opera.  In that case, it seems the spouse traveling on an IV gave CBP reason to believe they were not planning on actually residing in the US permanently.  Personally, I would not worry about it too much as the same thing can happen even if flying here.  Which land crossing are you thinking of using?

You show up at the border and let them know you are endorsing your visa.

 

There is no need to tell them you are turning around unless they ask. Then you just tell them what your plans are. Returning to get the rest of your stuff later and what ever else it is you need to wrap up.
