I gave them a week to get me in the system, that should not be needed now so as soon as you can.

Isn't it easier to do it after marriage, so you don't have to change the name with the SSA again after you get married and change your name?

It is easier to get one when the names on passport I94 visa and ssn application are the same. Waiting can mean that the ssa check  processes don’t come through in the limited time period for issuing a ssn on a K1.. which then means that you have to wait until by the EAD or GC. Its needed for bank, drivers licence etc

Hello. I just arrived here in Florida, USA 8 days ago on K-1 Visa.  I got confused about getting the SSN. When is it good to apply for SSN? Before the marriage or after the marriage? Your answer is much appreciated. Thank you.

Visa Journey guide advises to get the SSN BEFORE marriage.....at least a few weeks prior to expiration of I-94.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

~~Moved to SSN, from AOS Family K1/K3 P&P- the OP is asking about the steps to a SSN~~

Mod Hat Off

It is advised to get the SSN before getting married as some of the employees at the SS office are under the impression that marriage voids the visa and will deny the application. It really is not hard to go back later to update the card when you have your EAD or GC in your married name.

And when you get married, are you supposed to update your name to the new one then? I've read the recommendation here is to change your name with the I-485 and I-765 (then they send you a new SS card with the new name on it). My question is should we also do it before that with the marriage license?
