My son is friends with a guy whose father is Canadian. The father has been here for 20 years or so, perfectly legal and carrying the 'old' greencard. Wes and I ran into him about two weeks ago, and he was telling us how he recently filed for his Natz after he learned of the upcoming fee increases.

Turns out though (as he related his story) there may have been something else that 'prompted' his renewed interest in his immigration status.

Like many others who carry the old card with no expiry date, and happily living in America blissfully ignorant of immigration, he never did any follow-ups with his card. On a recent foray to the Department of Motor Vehicles, he was informed that 'immigration is looking for you'.

Upon phoning the Pittsburgh District Office, he was informed his status was ok, but he needed to complete an I-90.

Interesting story, IMO. A state agency aiding DHS in the search for a 'missing' immigrant.

I sometimes wonder if the INS have any power what-so-ever outside of their offices. "Looking for someone" they don't have the resources to track down millions of illegal aliens, let alone one guy at the DMV

But you're right, if the state agency is now working with the DHS that is interesting.

The fact that the DHS got the DMV to do something is even more so.
