BEWARE THE MARS HOAX: It's August, which means it's time for the annual Mars Hoax. An email is going around claiming that Mars will approach Earth on August 27th; the encounter will be so close, the email states, that Mars will rival the full Moon in size and brightness. (Imagine the tides!) Don't believe it. The Mars Hoax email first appeared in 2003. On August 27th of that year, Mars really did come historically close to Earth. But the email's claim that Mars would rival the Moon was grossly exaggerated. Every August since 2003, the email has staged a revival."

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Kathryn,

Thanks for that. Yes every year around this time I get the same e-mail. Astronomy is some what of a past time for me, so when friends start asking me about this I cringe. Especially those that don't want to believe it's a hoax.

I wouldn't know whether I've ever gotten such email. I do not review whatever lands in the spam folder. Ever.

Its not really spam though, its a chain letter, so if you get it will most likely be forwarded from people you know.

I don't get chain letters and even if I did, I wouldn't open them. Besides, chain letters are really just another form of spam.

Right... OK. Exactly how would you know what it is without opening it? A friend sends you an email with an inobvious subject heading and you instinctively know not to read it? OK, mate whatever! I think you've just been lucky personally.

Nani receives tons of chain letters and they are all very easy to spot: Subject line typically starts FW: FW: FW: ....

Any such mail, I would not open. ;)
