It will be a very gringo Thanksgiving at casa Cruz in good 'ole NoDak to give our Nicaraguan friends a taste of the upper Midwest festivities: turkey, stuffing, cheesy/creamy hashbrown taters, veggies, apple & mini pumpkin pies, along with lefse or as I describe it to them - the Norwegian tortilla. I gotta include part of the ND food traditions thanks to overwhelming majority of us having German or Norsky roots. 

 

Turkey stuff on Thursday followed by a weekend of gallo pinto, Nica tacos, pollo a la plancha, rice up to our ears and all the Nicaraguan foods we can manage to churn out of the kitchen in a limited amount of time. Pics to follow!

Man Erases Entire Year's Worth Of Exercise In One Meal

Made turkey first time ever. I think I left in the oven too long as it was just starting to dry up. Lesson learned! but people went back for seconds so must not have been too bad. All the lefse is gone and they compared it to a very similar Nica treat (though not made from potatoes). Ate up a huge cauldron of rice in less than 24 hours and fried up some beef and leftover-turkey Nicaraugan tacos with a repollo salad and sour cream (and ketchup which I chose to not put on mine). Finished off the weekend by cheating and ordering pizza...we were all tired of the kitchen at that point hehe!

Drove to Scottsdale, met with friends, ate prime rib, drove home.  It was a very nice time.

Definitely, and the drive was not that bad either even considering the utter boredom of I40 across Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, and I44 through Missouri, and I70 across Illinois and Indiana.

Interstates the whole way?  Aw, shucks.  Next time, consider heading across the Oklahoma Panhandle before cutting south.  Boise City (pronounced Boys), Okla. is the westernmost town still in the Central time zone.  And, do not go even a fraction of a mile per hour over the speed limits in Guymon, Okla. (voice of experience here).

 

On my trip around there in 2003, I was somewhat surprised that the northwestern portion of the Texas Panhandle was hilly.  In non-winter, the entire TX Panhandle is exceptionally scenic.

Thanksgiving was successful though extremely tiring. After making most of all the food with me, my husband put up the pre-lit tree. There were many bulbs to replace. By the time I got done doing all the dishes, I was tired but thought it important to get some exercise in so we went for a walk around the neighborhood. The smell of pot permeated (ugh) everywhere outside... I guess there were some 'interesting' Thanksgivings going on. On Friday, I had multiple errands to run - the brand new pot store in town was so overflowing with cars it caused a traffic jam - so was stuck in traffic some time just to get some groceries. In fact I'd say there were more people there than at the Walmart for Black Friday. Put decorations on the tree, and while my husband worked on the outside, I finished up the last minute gardening tasks before the cold front came in. On Sunday we went on our morning coffee and walk by the water, and stopped over at the department store to see how bad it was after Friday. Surprisingly hardly any one there, and was still well stocked. Everything is also self-checkout now, which I liked. But my real purpose was to get my husband into a fitting room to try on some pants because the man hasn't had anything new in about six years and they are falling off him/worn out. But some of the male species don't seem to like the fuss of trying things on and get very flustered. Out of 7 pairs he tried on, we only came home with 1. A small victory! At least it was a deep discount. I spent an hour trying to argue with mom about making sure she wears safe slippers on her feet. How it works is you buy mom slippers, she will say they are amazing, and then a few days later say they are terrible and go back to wearing slippers that are falling apart and dangerous to walk on.

 

Almost all my xmas shopping is done online now, and about 60% is wrapped already. Deals were poor though.

I can honestly say I am not a big fan of trying on clothes in a changing room.

Oh, brother -- not enough space, never enough hooks on the wall or door, hard to put non-purchases back on hangers, usually cluttered from what previous on-tryers left, usually not enough light... what else?
