I love how people think Canada is some far away magic snow land when it is like 1/3 of Canadians live 100 kms or less of the US border.

When I was in Appleton, Wisconsin on business one year (yawn) I was asked how the weather "up there" in Toronto was.... "betcha it's pretty cold right now." I replied that, actually, they were geographically farther north than I was. They were puzzled. But it's a pretty honest mistake. People do tend to think in black and white.

I also had a misconception about Wisconsin, though. I'd heard they were the dairy capital of the US or some such thing, so I was looking forward to trying some great cheeses and butter. Do you know I never saw any butter at any of the restaurants, and no nice cheeses.... just that plastic "American" stuff. Weird.

It's interesting how there can be such common misconceptions from people in a country so close to ours.

On the flip side I lived in New Zealand for a while and pretty much everyone I met had heard of or knew of Calgary - in fact when I moved back here 2 people I knew in NZ visited Calgary. The older ones remembered serving with Canadians in WWII and had only nice things to say.

It's what I call the Commonwealth phenomenon -- I've always gotten along better with UK'ers, Aussies, etc etc --- same sense of humour or something, dunno

Anyhoo - G&A your post made me laugh and Krikit that is strange about the butter and cheese is it not! My Great Grandparents came up from Wisconsin to Calgary - perhaps it was for the butter!

Totally agree! We have the ability to have that dry humour and understand it the same way they do I believe. Aussies and Canadians usually get along pretty well it seems. Laid back mentality.

I find things funny here, I noticed, that fellow Americans don't. I don't think a Rick Mercer type would fly here. There is the John Stewart and Stephen Colbert (both of which are great) but not the same comedy really as a this hour has 22 minutes or royal canadian air farce.
