The thing that gets me with this thread is that many of you are saying "oh but it's only a little bit of pee" but it is actually much worse than that.

Everything a person, who hasn't washed their hands, touches in a bathroom has germs on it afterwards. Multiply that by the additional people who have used that bathroom and not washed their hands by...and that is an awful amount of germs to be then getting on your hands.

Ick.

ETA: However, this shouldn't encourage us to over clean our homes. We need some bacteria to keep our immune systems healthy otherwise the slightest infection could make us ill.

Thank you once again for this lovely-mags-esque forensic explanation of multiplication of germies.

What doesn't kill you will make you stronger. Kids these days have a lot of allergies and compromised immune systems because their paranoid parents disinfect everything. You can't gain immunity from stuff you don't encounter!

If there's an outbreak of cholera or dysentery, I'll be more uptight about non-washers. Until then, there's not much to worry about.

Isn't it a big taboo to shake somebody's left hand because that's the hand they use to clean themselves with?

I like to change it up every now and then...use my right hand...sometimes both at the same time.

You know, this is just one of those things that doesn't merit worrying about.

Just like you can't control people on the road who are driving incorrectly, you can't be a bathroom monitor (well you can, but sheesh is that what you want to do for a career).

Anyway, my point is you can only look out for number 1 (no pun intended :) )

You can only wash your hands, you can't wash the other person's hands - so just a non-issue to me.

In Middle Eastern countries and other places like India, yes. But that rule isn't really a part of Western culture, so there is no assurance that the hand you shake isn't also the hand that is used for the dirty deeds.

I just assume they didn't piss or sh!t on themselves. No reason to wash unless you are dirty.

Generally, people aren't pissing or sh!tting on themselves, but cleaning up after the latter does require the use of hands, and the tissue used doesn't always keep the hand used clean; so, a person coming out of a stall and not washing properly afterwards is indeed a cause for concern

dont get me going on shopping carts.. augh... think about it..

Your food goes in a cart.. but.. what else does.??

Little kids.. with dirty shoes.. possibly walking in all kinds of things..

or lil rugrats with snotty noses... aughhhh.. .. just think .. what could be on those things... .. aughhh...

I can't stand people's fluids, smells and filth. I pay attention to people's hands, hygiene practice and it's one of the reason why I sometimes don't like the people around me.

I never eat anything that was brought over from some of the people I know or never eat food that was tended to me with bare hands or things like that, of course I notice when people don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom or before they eat or people that touch their feet and then reach into a bag of chips or things like that, it disgusts me so much, blech!

Surprising to me, that some people don't really care about this issue.

Someone doing number 2, without a hand wash, should be of concern to everyone.

Guess this is why the problem perpetuates, no?

I think it is absolutely disgusting when people don't wash their hands, especially in a work situation. If you want to spread germs all over your house that is your business but please don't spread it all over my work environment.

I have heard some of the girls use the excuse that when going pee they aren't coming in contact with anything but the TP and therefore there isn't any germs...I don't buy that.

But then you have guys...they can't even come up with an excuse like that...it is skin to skin contact in most cases. How can you justify not washing your hands?!? You wouldn't go around rubbing your private areas all over door handles and other places but aren't you basically doing that when you have just touched yourself and then never washed your hands?

The whole thing grosses me out. My boss never washes his hands and everytime I have to work with him in close proximity I am always wondering how many germs I am picking up.

Call me a fanatic if you want but I like to be relatively clean.

It grosses me out when I see someone not wash their hands after they use the restroom in our office building. It doesn't matter if it is pee or poop. They should wash their hands.

Also, people who cough or sneeze without attempting to cover at all. They just sneeze or cough all over whatever is around them. If you don't want to use your hands, then cover with something else-your arm, your elbow joint, even your shirt - JUST COVER.
