How happy would you be if your personal information was given to a criminal??

I just got my FBI report, the one I've been sitting here waiting and waiting for... the one little piece I need to send in my visa application.

They were very good to use my express mail prepaid envelope! BUT THEY SENT ME SOMEONE ELSE'S RECORD! I am so shaky and upset, I feel like I'm going to be sick. My fingerprint card is stapled to the back of some woman in NY, who has a criminal record!! Assault with a deadly weapon, intent to cause bodily injury... Nice.

Mine was printed and stapled to someone else's obviously, so I have to sit here and wonder who the hell has my social sec #, my address, EVERYTHING!! even my height/weight and the color of my hair!

This is so wrong on so many levels. Besides the time wasted waiting for this thing, now somebody has my stuff and knows I have a squeeky clean record! I just wanna cry.

I don't even know who to call. :(

In Shon's words, Dayum.

I wish I had an answer for you, but that sucks. You might want to call the SSA and have some kind of a freeze put on your SSN - you have no idea who has it now. As far as the FBI is concerned, I really don't know.

I hope you manage to get it sorted out.

I can't stop crying and I can't get a hold of my husband.... this is so wrong. I feel violated... and I paid for this service, and I spent money on the speedy delivery both ways. I just can't believe this.

Call the credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) and request that a 90-day fraud alert be placed on your SSN. They MUST do this for you. If after 90 days you have reason to believe that your number is being abused, you can have the initial alert extended. It shouldn't affect you adversely other than that if you apply for credit sometime during that period, you may have a tougher time getting it because financial institutions will see the fraud alert and want to verify that you are really you!

Call your bank and ask them to do the same.

ACT QUICKLY; I lost my wallet once and had it stolen a second time and had to go through this twice. Fun times. <_<

Having it stolen is painful enough. Knowing that the FBI just mailed me someone else's record, for some reason makes me feel much worse. I had my purse stolen Oct 05, and I did put those holds on, so I will do it again, but this just is rotten. Besides the pain of the waiting.......

I think the woman may feel just as bad for you seeing her number.. But then again criminals don't care, they love that kinda info.

I worry more about who she might *sell* it to. :(

I just found some info on the FBI site, on the Fingerprints Record System.

ACCESS CONSTRAINTS: All records in FIRS are protected from unauthorized access through appropriate administrative, physical, and technical safeguards. These safeguards include restricting access to those with a need to know to perform their official duties, and using locks, alarm devices, passwords, and/or encrypting data communications.

We use locks, alarms, and passwords, but WOOPS we put it in the wrong envelope. sorry!

Who do I even report this to? How do I go higher than the FBI or DOJ?

you definitely need to call the credit bureaus.. quickly. Try calling your congressman asking who to call about the FBI screwing up.... they would know better than us.

Try not to panic!!! It could even possibly be that the woman whose card you have feels just as horrible and panicky... what if the record of hers was a one time thing and she's horribly embarrassed that you now have that info about her?

Start making calls......

ouch!!!

all good advice here... i say call the bank and the credit agencies first... also call the ssa... then, whoever you had to contact for this information and have it sent to you... i would call them...

un-freaking-believable! but, just goes to show what kind of idiots we have working in our government system. i don't necessarily believe that ALL of our government agents are idiots... but, beginning to believe that at least over half is definitely soft in the thinking area...

*hugs*

I couldn't sleep much last night, ended up taking a nighty-night pill and then woke up groggy at 6 a.m. and got a call thru. The good news is, the took this very seriously, I didn't get any non-chalant response. The first person I spoke with at FBI tried to go down the path of "you received that because you have a criminal record". I said "with all due respect, I am not a 5'6 black female in new york named blah blah"

She said OH hold please, you need to talk to my supervisor. Supervisor FBI agent X actually ADMITTED TO THE MISTAKE and said one of their people stapled the wrong thing to my card. I am very surprised that they admitted it, these days you usually just hear the blaim game. So after figuring out how Supervisor X was going to get me my actual record immediately upon receipt of this wrong report, I told her that I was very upset all night thinking that this other person has my record.

She assured me that since I had no record, that nothing would have printed out. They just stamp the card "no criminal record". I hope this is true.

Either way I'm putting a hold on all three credit reports and calling my bank. I'd like to believe Supervisor X, but I am not going to take any chances.
