My husband has also talked about doing this. His name is a nightmare of vowels that no one has any idea how to pronounce and he wants to change it. I've found that it doesn't seem to be too difficult to do, at least here in Massachusetts. However, I'm worried that it will cause problems when it comes time to remove conditions. The name check process is hairy enough as it is.

Any thoughts?

I don't know if it's gonna affect the name check process. Do they even do a name check for the removal of conditions? I don't wanna come across as an ignoramus, but I thought they didn't.

But I'm gonna wait till I get my permanent GC, and then I'll file a name change, and then I-90 and all that good stuff. My name is not that much of a nightmare for the people to pronounce, but the not-so-brilliant government dude didn't spell it the way I like (in English) when he issued my passport. And I want an American name anyways, so might as well change it to what I really want :)

I have a quite similar issue with the name change as well. My fiance is Thai and she wants to know if she can change her first name while we are still waiting for the NOA2 to arrive. I have submitted the form I-129F back in May. I have received the NOA1 but still waiting for NOA2. I would like some advices on this matter. Should we wait until she gets to USA (California) and then change the both names (first and last)? Would this hinder the K-1 package? I have read this thread but all have mentioned on name changes after the visa was approve. Also, I changed all of my name as well when I got my US citizenship through naturalization process back in 1990. I was born in Thailand as well. The process was easy because I applied for citizenship and they asked you on the form if you want to change your name. Please provide your advices and suggestions. Thanks so much.

By what means does she intend to change her name? Marriage is a natural way and dependant on your jurisdiction maybe the easiest....

YMMV

I think it would be easier to have her named changed once she is in the U.S., similar to how you have had it done. It absolutely can be done beforehand, but she would need to get all her documents in order I would think, which may be difficult to do in the timeframe.

The reason for the first name change is that her mom have this superstitious beliefs about it. I guess she thinks bad things keep happening to my fiance lately and thinks the first name has something to do with it. I am Thai background but I don't know much about the spiritual stuff behind all of these. Anyway, so you guys suggested that I should wait until she get to USA.? Should we change it right away before marriage certificate and SSAN? Please help.

Thank you,

Chai

well, it sounds like her mom will be happier the sooner the name change is. the easiest way to do it would be to get married in Iowa or certain parts of Minnesota. you should be able to do it before even entering the U.S., but i don't know how that would impact your paperwork, so you might need to contact a qualified immigration attorney.

if it was up to me, i would try to placate her mother to allowing the name change at marriage.
