I saw a show on them once as well and they get HUGE amounts of donations,.

They were building this massive house and they got like three washer and dryers, an industrial kitchen, full furniture..free diapers etc.

I took the wrong path in life, I should have jsut popped out one kid after another and I would have been set!

Another thing that bugged me watching that show is that the older kids take care of the littler ones, COMPLETELY and have no lives.

I think it's sad.

There's no way to give any one on one attention with that many kids. It's like she's addicted to being pregnant

I think the number of kids is more due to the fact that they are probably of the same belief the Catholic Church holds (although they're not Catholic I think) that every child is a gift from God and none should be prevented. Although I have to say, if I had 16 brothers and sisters the knowledge that it was obvious my parents do it A LOT is kinda creepy

You have to be trying more than the Church recommends to have 17 kids in as many years.

I can't imagine the headache of all those kids. I have two and they wear me out!

I thought the exact same thing when I watched the show. Those poor kids don't have lives outside of their family. It is one thing to learn responsibility as a child and teenager it is another to be totally responsible for one of your siblings and their well being.

Honestly how good of an education can they be getting? I am sure the majority of it has to be self taught as there is no way the mom could have any amount of time to be teaching them...especially when there is such a range in grade levels.

So at what point does having another child create diminshing returns on the family overall, in terms of attention, affection, financial capability, etc..? I suppose each family is different, but how much quality time do the parents really have with their children when the families are so large. I have a hard enough time balancing the needs of my two teenage daughters.... and they're with their dad half the time. More power to 'em if they can make it work, but I couldn't imagine being happy, or fulfilled as a woman if I were the mother of so many. There's more to life than motherhood. But I guess, she'll be a grandmother soon enough too. Her whole life will be 'mothering'. Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round, right?
