For my children, no I will not promote nor allow the pill.

Yeah - LisaD rocks! (Although she's been hating me lately - I figured I'd win her affection back by tossing a few compliments. )

Mark you know I could never hate ya

I think you took my initial post a little too literal. When I say 'teach'...I mean 'promote'.

OK, you'll forgive me then as I clearly misunderstood you. I work in an educational institution and have had to sit down and listen to endless seminars about the difference between "teaching" and "promoting" when giving University lectures (mainly due to moany republicans who think everything a lecturer says has some leftie bias). Subsequently I don't consider 'teach' and 'promote' to mean the same thing!

I meant with my own kids.

Like when you teach them your values, beliefs, etc.

Teach as in 'these are the methods that are available to you'

:)

Sex good.

Abstinence bad.

That's true when you're married.

When you're not, then sex is bad, abstinence is good.

Say what?! Tell your good pastor that one can have sex before marriage without committing adultery.

Main Entry: adul·tery

Pronunciation: &-'d&l-t(&-)rE

Function: noun

Inflected Form(s): plural -ter·ies

:voluntary sexual intercourse between a married man and someone other than his wife or between a married woman and someone other than her husband;

yeah, if both of them are not nor never have been married, it's not adultery. Its just wild monkey sex. ;)

The point is, that yes, abstinence is the ONLY way to prevent unwanted pregnancy and STDs of any sort. But, teaching abstinence only in schools is definitely (statistically proven even) not the way to go. Kids need the whole truth, and they need to know exactly what causes what and when, and yes, even on a full moon, or when you're standing on your head! :P

I'm all for advocating abstinence until a person is physically and emotionally mature enough to suffer the consequences, but I'm nowhere near naive enough to believe that teens are going to abstain just because adults tell them they should.

The only sure method of birth control is abortion. We need to update our terminology IMO. Condoms and pills are conception control. Condoms are also STD control, and used together, bc pills and condoms are 99% effective. (anyone recall the episode when Rachel announces to Ross that she's pregnant and he reads the condom package label? ) Of course bc pills have their drawbacks and health concerns, and these should be discussed with a doctor and a girl/woman should be checked regularly for side effects. There are also other similar options like patches or sub-q inserts that are more effective simply because they can't be forgotten as easily. None of it is foolproof however, other than abstinence.

The consequences of sex go far beyond just the threat of STDs and pregnancy. Sex in a girl too young could cause several other health issues, up to and including infertility in later life. Not to mention of course, sex with boys and girls too young to understand exactly what they're doing can be fairly traumatic. Boys need to be taught this just as much as girls. They need to know they won't die if they can't unload, just as much as the girls need to know how not to get pregnant.

I live in a small town in North Carolina, and the number of 13 and 14 y/o mothers is really really sad. And once they've had the first one, they'll have 3 more before they're 20. What kind of life is that? For any of them?

Wrong, I had lots of sex before marriage and it was all great (and safe). I'd highly recommend it to anyone personally, as long as they understand the responsibilities and risks. I don't personally have any religious beliefs so I don't have any hang ups about sex being a marriage thing. In fact personally I believe its a really bad idea for people to hold off on sex before marriage. Sex is a really important thing in marriage, I personally would not want to get married to someone unless I knew I was sexually compatible with them.

As I always say: Try before you buy. :D

I'm sure it's no surprise that I completely disagree.

And why is it that mainly in western cultures this is the mentality, where divorce is at the highest rates? This idea of trying before buying doesn't seem to help couples stay together. Probably because there is much more to marriage than that(which I know you know) and couples since the beginning of time have waited til marriage for whatever reasons and have had long successful marriages. So I still stand behind waiting, and that you don't have to test drive because when you love someone, you love them, and can marry them without test driving.

Married since 9-18-04(All K1 visa & GC details in timeline.)

I don't think that one has anything to do with the other. Pre-marital sex occurs in places other than those decadent western societies. It's just not so much out in the open. But it happens all the same. Also, many of those long lasting marriages outside the western world look successful on the surface only... ;)

Just because it's not in the open, doesn't mean it doesn't exist all the same. Pre-marital sex is not the only thing that's more an underground type thing in the more "traditional" spots in the world. Always makes me laugh when Nani seriously claims that they don't have homosexuals in Ethiopia like they have here in the US. I keep telling her that she just don't see them there because people there cannot show that kind of thing unless they have suicidal tendencies.
