I'm not talking about your views on what method is best....you said I was 'promoting ignorance' and I'm explaining why I feel you're wrong.

So did you not suggest that teenagers should not be taught about the pill then?

For my children, no I will not promote nor allow the pill.

I'm not asking about "promoting" or "allowing", I'm simply talking about educating people about the pill, and not just your children, but in sex ed classes in general.

You'd be a good politician BTW, good at avoiding questions! ;)

Kids are going to learn about sex whether their parents like it or not. Without a good sex education program, they are going to learn about it from their friends/partners. And what they learn may likely not even be correct. Look at how many myths persist. Like you cant get pregnant if its your first time. Or how about, don't worry baby, I'll pull out in time.

I think you took my initial post a little too literal. When I say 'teach'...I mean 'promote'. I will teach my children the benefits of using condoms...should they not wait...only because of the dire health risks in unprotected sex. I will not teach my children about the 'benefits' of using bcp, because of all the reasons I've repeatedly mentioned here already.

OK, you'll forgive me then as I clearly misunderstood you. I work in an educational institution and have had to sit down and listen to endless seminars about the difference between "teaching" and "promoting" when giving University lectures (mainly due to moany republicans who think everything a lecturer says has some leftie bias). Subsequently I don't consider 'teach' and 'promote' to mean the same thing!

sex education needs to start at home..

I so agree with that. It shouldn't be a taboo subject, after all we were all born from it. Yeah it's not easy to accept that your kids are going to have a sex life, but it's always better to create a dialog and help them learn about their option beforehand.

This is just a pet peeve of mine. Why should the firl have to submit herself to sometime very harmful hormones, because a guy just might forget a condom. Female condom is a good substitute. But really, women a fertile a few days out of the month, men are fertile all the time. It just irks me to no end that the female is often blamed and held wholly responsible. But thats why teaching abstinence or a committed relationship first, before casual sex, just makes more sense.

No kidding. Do they tell the guys that if they get the girl pregnant they are the father and are responsible for this? That they have no excuse for taking that risk too and should pay the consequences? It takes two to tango, both are responsible.

I think it's important to educate about all your options. I'm a mod on a teenage forum, and some of the sex questions I see sometimes just shock me because it shows a lack of knowledge on how their own body works.

In the country where I come from you can get a free STD test done in many clinics or hospitals. I think it's a great thing because let's be honest: most teenagers don't make that much money and won't invest into making sure they can have safe sex.

To me condom is #1 and every teenager should have an emergency one just in case.

I think what does it most of all when it comes to educating is hearing someone who is around your age and did that stupid mistake, because you can relate. I mean if your best friend gets pregnant or gets a girl pregnant you're more likely to be careful right?

I have a problem with promoting abstinence only because I don't believe everyone has the mental power to do it. It's a good basic idea but you should be educated on your other options too. Honestly when you see nowadays how long some wait to get married I can understand that many won't wish to wait for it.

Plus it's a personal thing but to me I'd rather know that sex is good when I marry someone. It's not the cement of a relationship but it sure helps.

God might rather have you wait until you are married, but first of all he probably wants you to be healthy and responsible.

And last and not least it's good to know the positive and negative sides of each method. I remember watching a short film about drugs where they said the positive and negative side effects and it definitely sticked to me. You have to be honest with teenagers because they are the next adults.

Now would I.

Teach is to educate about all aspects of something (hopefully objectively).

Promote means advocating a specific one(or 2, etc.) (subjective)

For the same reason as Dr. LHA. As a teacher there's a BIG difference b/n "promote" and "teach."

sex education needs to start at home..

I agree wholeheartedly with this. The more involved the parents are and the the more the ethics and morals of the family are instilled in the child, the greater chance there is of these beliefs being carried on. Now, I'm not naive enough to believe that there won't be rebellion, but I think that open lines of communication help. Unfortunately not all parents care and not all kids listen. I think I am blessed because I have a teenage son who does listen...about sex, drinking, drugs, etc. Of course I also have the benefit that he is in a private (religious) school and I happen to also be a teacher/department head there, so it's not like he can escape me :) I also had him at a very young age (19) and I've never kept it a secret from him or been ashamed about it, but it did provide a background for discussions about sex (his dad and I were married, but we were still way too young).

I think that the pill is a good form of birth control but that it's nmore for someone who is older in a committed relationship, but who chooses to not have a child. i don't think it's appropriate for teens b/c it doesn't protect from STD's. That is JMHO.
