Well, let's really think about this here...isn't the raising of children and the instilling of values up to the PARENTS? Isn't it THEIR responsibility to teach whatever they believe to their children concerning sex?

isn't it ironic that the ones that squawk the loudest about the government strongly support schools teaching kids about sex?

Please look up irony in the dictionary and get back to us and explain your statement.

Indeed - especially where it relates to a point that was never made. That's generally referred to as putting words in a person's mouth.

I might as well say that those who complain about that being done to them - seem to have no qualms doing it to others.

are you feeling defensive for some reason?

keep patting yourself on the back, i'm sure it makes you feel better ;)

Is that a comeback you use for everyone you like to bully here?

I've expressed my on-topic opinion, and I'm happy with it - misunderstandings / misinterpretations aside. That said, I didn't see your on-topic opinion in 14 pages of discussion. But then - I probably missed it. Must be it.

probably. now go bait someone else in your attempt to find someone to bully.

HAH!

I take it we are really talking about kids under 18. Kids who are the responsibility of their parents because they can still not take care of themselves or make decisions for themselves. Once you are over 18, you are well aware of what you are doing and what the risks are and the choice is yours alone. But the kids, whose brains are still not fully formed, need guidance and good example.

Where are these people not being taught the birds and the bees in their health class? I went to Catholic school and they even taught sex ed. It was called the GUS program. Growing up Sexually. It happened in 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Some parts the boys and girls were in the same class and sometimes they were separated so we would feel more comfortable to ask questions. We learned about our periods and menstrual cycles and how babies were made. The boys learned about their bodies and what changes they were going through. Then we were taught that the only 100% certain way to avoid pregnancy and STDs is to abstain. At no time was I ever confused as to what was the smartest and healthiest path.

I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that the ONLY way to avoid pregnancy and STDs 100% is to abstain completely. No birth control or condom can give you that 100% certainty. We were taught this and aware of the risks. They taught us the truth.

You can call abstinence programs dinosaurs, but they really speak the truth. Kids also need to be reminded that they don't need to be having sex just because all of their friends supposedly are (you know how that goes with bragging and exaggerating the truth to look tough.) It isn't a competition. Like the movie American Pie where the boys HAD to lose their virginity before graduation. How dumb.

Don't people worry about the physical and mental health of these kids?

Flame on!

Yes, we're talking about high school students here, and I suppose, jr. high. And once you're over 18 they can legally make their own decisions, but if they've never been taught anything about the birds and the bees, then how do they just automatically know what they're doing and what are the consequences? Hell, I know adults in their 20s and 30s who have no freakin' clue how their bodies work, or how their partner's body works, and they had sex ed!

There are several states in the US that teach ONLY abstinenece. Which means, the teachers and ministers stand up there in front of the class and say "don't have sex, ever" and that's about it. As another post mentioned, even the school nurse can't say anything about reproductive health, even to the 12 and 13 y/o students that are already pregnant, it is against school policy to teach them anything. The get no knowledge about how their reproductive systems work, no knowledge about what is a condom (or they get handed propaganda like some other post gave with incorrect information falsly quoting the CDC...), no correct knowledge about what the birth control pill can and can't do etc etc etc....sex is bad, so they're not allowed to do it so they don't get taught anything about it.

In a *good* sex ed class, abstinence is just ONE upon many subjects that should be covered. Abstinence is a choice, and yes, the best choice for avoiding STDs and unwanted pregnancy. But its not going to work for everyone, so they also NEED to know the truth, they need to know what are the other options, and they need to know how pregnancy occurs, and how to properly put on a condom, etc etc etc...

No one is saying that abstinence programs are dinosaurs, pretty much everyone here has touted the efficacy of abstinence, and said it should be taught. The discussion is that Abstinence ONLY programs Do Not Work, statistics have proven that. Its an incomplete program, everything else needs to be added so these people now what the heck is happening to their bodies and why.

And from today's news: S Africa Aids sacking condemned

She has previously clashed with her boss, the controversial Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.

Dr Tshabalala-Msimang is known as Dr Beetroot after urging those with HIV to eat beetroot and garlic, while the government has been condemned for not providing enough anti-retroviral drugs.

Does it help?

Only that nobody will want to have sex with you if you eat a diet of beetroot and garlic.
