What are you even talking about?

I pay taxes. Therefore I assume some of that money that is being taken out of my paycheck is going to be used to maintain essential infrastructure. If its isn't - and then who is at fault? Guess it must be me - because the taxpayer can control how the government spends public money.

You're dropping "Tim Nice-but Dim" moments all over the shop today.

One bridge in 70 or 80,000? Damn good record if you ask me!

Like buying an average American made car, for twice as much as a luxury import.

Show me an average American car that costs twice as much as a luxury import.

There's still a liability. Earthquakes aside this isn't something that happens spontaneously.

Let me ask you this - if you hit a pot hole in the road at night and wreck your suspension, who are you going to blame?

There is no one to blame, pot holes are a normal occurance. I might call and let the street dept. know about it so they could fix it.

Read the post again. Dan + Gemvita was not implying American cars are twice as much as buying a luxury import. Are people are having issues reading today?

Or as road bridges fall apart with apparently no money to pay for them.

I was going to mention that. In my mind Katrina and this bridge collapse are just the opening salvos in the ###### storm that's going to be caused by the general neglect of public services in this country. The infrastructure is clearly crumbling.

As a conservative I have said many times, in this forum, that America's 100 year old infrastructure is a bloody joke.

The major issue here is that investing in infrastructure, bettering this country and it's living standards is not a high priority, in comparison to most other developed or developing nations. I bet if you where to list the top ten priorities of America to the top ten priorities of every other developed nation you would find that while the other countries are similar with one another, their priorities are quite different to America.

Nonetheless, what does one expect from 40 years of focusing on BS issues such as rights, like marriage rights for gay whales, while forgetting about every other basic issue; which is a priority in most other nations. So don't give this ####### that Democrats have done so much while Republicans have squandered the countries money. The last major infrastructure investment in this country was during the Eisenhower era.

Global Investment in infrastructure is soaring, but not in the US. According to a new Report by the urban Land Institute, a think tank, the nation is falling behind in critical areas, like Maintenance

Mass Transit: Few cities have good public transport, and higher fares can't pay all off the bills. Chicago needs $6 billion just for subway repairs.

Railways: Forget bullet trains. The US is decades behind global standards and will need $250 billion over 20 years to catch up.

Roads: Experts say 97% of roads need improvement. Meanwhile traffic jams in some big cities tripled over the past 25 years..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Agreed, this is not a partisan issue, like many things. However people on here chose to make it so as a way of dismissing what people are saying. The country with healthy inhabitants, a solid infrastructure and well maintained services is in the interest of everyone from the working class man to the big business.

And I agree with that. The biggest issues overseas are always on the back-burner here. While I highly respect this country, it's foundation and achievements I am quite disappointed in the physical condition of the post 60's America. I live in Loudon county in N. VA which is one of the wealthiest counties in America yet am seriously embarrassed to invite my relatives from Aus to visit. If they saw DC, the 'nations capital', they would think I am living in a third world nation. NYC's subway stations for example have not been updated in over 100 years. All I hear is there is no money bla bla bla...

PS It is time for America to invest in America and not in other nations.

It's also 'normal' to fix them. Are you honestly going to say that you're not going to be least bit peed off that you've got to stump up for massive repairs to your car resulting from something that routine road maintenance should fix. Guess you must like paying twice.

Could not agree more. I have replaced three windshields within 1 year. Not only are the roads destroying our cars but I bet a lot of deaths are due to poorly maintained roads. 3/4 of the roads barely have proper markings and reflectors on them let alone lights. You also have to love those cheap concrete roads which are not only extremely unsafe but destroy your suspension.

I want my taxes to improve America and not be wasted on #######..

We had to replace the shocks on our car last month. First time I've ever had to do that on a car (which surprised my dad as he's never had to do that on any car he has owned in 40 years of driving). I suppose the atrocious condition of some of the roads in NJ had nothing to do with that I suppose.

This is what happens when people demand lowered taxes - you just end up spending more money later.

That says something considering NJ spends the highest amount on roads, per mile, in comparison to other states. What anyone against road taxes doesn't realize is that money wasted on car repairs and premature wear and tear costs 5 to 10 fold what would have been paid, in taxes, to fix the roads and build new ones in the first place.

It bites into the economy aswell. My 3rd windshield has a crack in it and the insurance company said they will not cover it this year. I will have to pay over $250 to get the 3rd windshield replaced. Consequently rather than me spending this elsewhere, such as eating out 6 to 7 times, I will stay home and spend the money on an imported windshield. Which adds little to no economic gain for the nation. Even the 3 previous claims I made have resulted in people's premiums increasing to pay for it.

It's funny because my wife warned me that America was a reactive nation. Until some celebrity dies or same large scale disaster happens we will not hear a word about roads, as was the case prior to the bridge collapsing. It is only a matter of time before this negligence catches up to the nation. Investing in roads and infrastructure will not only improve the nations living standards but also generate jobs and greatly reduce the number of deaths on the roads.

When does a divot in the road become a pothole?A pre-pothole repair crew! Are you kidding me? Since when do shocks last forever or any man made device that has moving parts. Who you gonna blame for the nail that gave you that flat tire? Who do you blame for hitting a deer on the highway? Okay lets just build all new elevated roads.
