Getting a new Can. Passport

Hi,

I need to renew (or get a new) my passport. How long does it take in Toronto? Do I have to do everything by mail or can I go into a passport office (a plus would be knowing where it is :) and I heard it takes about a week...is that true?

Thanks!

Also, I know I need certain vaccinations/immunizations. Do I do that AFTER my medical (does the doctor tell you what you need?) or before (how do I know which ones to get?)

Umm.. passport office. There are lots in Toronto. They all have a lineup 500 miles long. Get there early. You hand the application in, pay your money, ask for expedited service and you have it in a week to 10 days tops.

Download the application now so you can get it filled out. Needs to be signed by a guarantor.

As for the medical. Go to your doctor, get the shots you need if any. Take your vaccination records to the panel doc and that will save you some money. Basically, Get the Canadian govt. to pay for your shots so you can leave the country :-)

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, there's a passport office in St.Catharines Ontario that's always empty. I went in October 2004 and went in at about 2pm, fully expecting a huge line. There were about three people ahead of me. That's it. I got my passport by express post three business days later.

No, but my husband washed his! Luckily it wasn't damaged much -- it's just a little bit beaten up now. :P

My wife lost hers. She lost it on the day we were loading the truck for the US. I guess she threw it out. Too funny, she was crying! Anyhow, she just used her drivers licence and BC to get into the states. Then she went back and ordered a replacement no problem.

As for shots.. I dunno.. MMR, Tetnus.. check out the panel physicians website. They have a list. So does the department of State website. Bring that to your doctor. THis sis omething you should do now so its done and out of the way.

If you do a search on here you wil find what needles are required or google panel of physcicians in toronto. The list will come in your final packet as well. If you have no clue what needles you have had, contact your local health centre and they should have the records (might not) As wel lyour local family dr can take a blood sample, send it to the lab and they can identify what vacs yu have had in the past. If you look at the top of the Canada forum, you will find The Canuck Clearinghouse Thread LOTS of info in there. Cheers

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

How do I know what shots I need to get? I doubt my doctor knows the requirements... :)

They mail you the passport by Expresspost.

The immunization requirements are at www.panelphysicians.com

But if you're between the ages of 19 and 50, you need Td, MMR and Chicken Pox.. However, the panel physicians will take an oral statement if you've had them before.

The panel physician in Vancouver will take an oral statement for Chicken Pox only. If you don't have records you need to get a titre for MMR and if your antibodies are low on anything get a booster. Or skip the blood test and go straight to a booster! My MMR indicated low antibodies for rubella so I just had a booster yesterday.

Good luck!
