All you need is your social security # and one piece of ID and you can open a bank account.

Lightstalker,

It's pretty simple really. Pick a bank with features you want - go in and open the account.

We went to Bank of America (for various reasons) - they only needed two forms of ID - passport and a Texas ID (which was easy to get). Account open. We didn't have a SSN at the time, but added Karin's number later, once we got it.

It varies (from what I understand) from bank to bank, and even state to state - but it's certainly not a huge hurdle (at least in Texas). Call or stop in one (best in person IMO) and inquire.

Plenty of people have managed to open checking accounts here even before they have their SSN, as well... I opened one with US Bank two days after I got here and all I had to show was my passport (they used that and the K-1 visa as ID), and later brought them a copy of our rental agreement with my name on it as proof of my address (although I think they should have asked for that before opening the account and actually forgot!!)... you shouldn't have any problems opening an account, just shop around for a decent bank and give them a call! :)

K-1 visa holders can get an SSN, just wait 2 weeks after entry to apply for it, then using the SSN, and other ID like passport, and birth cert you can open an account or be added to your fiancee's account.

I added my wife to my HSBC account, they wanted SSN, Passport (Photo ID), and Birth cert to add her to the account.
