Move to a different bank, the one thing there is in the US, is no shortage of choice.

With any bank, due to the Patriot Act, all accounts opened must have a social security number. Only thing I can honestly think of would be to purchase some bonds....even if you purchased small ones...If you do a joint owner on it, all you need on the application is your social security number.

Tiffany banks with Wells Fargo and we had no problem adding me to her bank account and I am still living in the UK at the moment. All the bank needed was proof of ID and my UK address so standard Passport and Driving license was fine. They said the only time they need a SS number is if I wanted to open an account of my own.

I opened a regular checking account for myself in the US and did not have to supply a social security number. Apparently this is acceptable as the account is non-interest bearing. So I'd guess that its not really due to the Patriot Act, more a tax issue.

My bank is pulling this ####### with me. Once we're both working and I can afford to chuck the totally free banking (a perk with work), I'm changing banks. I had pleasure telling the woman that the Patriot Act says no such thing, and that its THEIR policy - so if she'd just admit that to me, I'd at least be happy for now, and would wait to pull my accounts for a bit. Untrue. I work in BSA/AML Compliance and write the annual training for our bank. What I can tell you is that The USA PATRIOT act requires that you collect ID certain pieces of ID from the customer, and allows for foreigners to present government issued photo identification, such as a Passport or other government issued ID, in lieu of a Social Security number. This ID must have a # that can be recorded.

However, banks are not obligated to open accounts for foreign individuals. Or, it cold be that the OP was speaking with someone who was uninformed at the bank. Not a stretch!

To the OP, keep shopping around, as there are definitely banks in the US who will accomodate your needs.

I too was able to (very easily) open a checking account here before I had my SSN. I arrived on a Saturday evening and had my checking account open (with US Bank) by noon on the Monday - they didn't give me any ####### about the Patriot Act! All I needed to show was some ID and (later - they actually opened my account several days BEFORE asking me about this in passing when I went in to withdraw some money!) proof of address. If you can't get your bank to add your wife onto the account, I doubt you'll have any difficulty finding one that will.

"Co-mingling of assets" is what they are looking for. Can mean many things.

Joint bank accounts, of course. Jointly held vehicles and real estate. Loans or other notes with both parties are obligors. Life insurance policies with named beneficiaries. Reciprocal wills.
