Green card no valid ID?

As a side note to this, I did carry around Andre's passport. It was the only ID he had before the greencard. Even though I stressed about losing it, I felt it was necessary.

No just a necesssity, but a legal requirement. However that is another flame war. ;)

Does each state issue a fact sheet to those licensed to sell/serve alcohol on acceptable forms of ID? I suppose if a greencard/PR card isn't on it then the person would assume they can't accept it as valid ID. In Ontario (Canada) the province issued such factsheets to those selling tobacco and alcohol and our Ontario health cards (which bore our photo, signature and DOB) could not be used as a valid form of ID to purchase these items because it didn't appear on the list.

I wonder if it's the same here?

I was in Walmart one day behind some like 70 something year old Mexican man who couldn't speak english, and was trying to buy a pack of cigarettes. She asked for ID and he showed the green card. She couldn't find his DOB on there, and he didn't know what she was asking, so she refused to sale them to him. He already had one pack rolled up in his sleeve, and there is no way she thought he was under 18... but she would NOT sell him... technicalities.. I think there comes a point where you cross the line of ridiculous

Some retailers input the DOB into the register when you purchase tobacco or alcohol. When someone is OBVIOUSLY of age, they usually just punch in a made up date instead of asking for ID. Don't see why she couldn't just punch in a dummy date. Geesh.

In this case.. i think that is Walmarts store policy.. but yeah.. kinda stupid

It's interesting 'cos before I got my GC, I tried to buy alcohol at a restaurant, and gave my EAD card as ID. The waitress said it wasn't valid and called the manager, who also said the same thing. It was kindof embarassing 'cos people at the restaurant stared at me, thinking I was trying to give a fake ID or something. I ended up ordering iced tea instead. Like other people have said, just get a state ID or driver's license and save yourself the trouble of having to explain what a GC is to people who are ignorant.

Yep that was exactly what happened to us, but instead we left the restaurant because we were so annoyed and didn't believe that they were right about the law (although they were :P). The manager told us to come back with his passport and he would only need to show it once and we wouldn't have to worry again, but I don't really wanna go back in there after we caused such a fuss!

They might spit in your food!

Yeah, I think we will wait a good while before going back (like when he has his state ID) and hope they don't remember us and think we got that coupon as a gift! :P I mean, how do you go in a restaurant and say hey, I need to talk to the manager, I was the one who made a big stink about the alcohol laws and was wrong about it.

You guys crack me up. I came over here on F-1 student visa, and i had to go apply for SSN even though I already knew I would be denied so that i could then go to the DMV (who told me to do this) so i could get my driver's license. Well, so I applied, got denied, then went to the DMV who then gave me a temporary but took :clock: SIX months to get me my official DL

why?

They kept sending me letters telling me i didnt have a SSN.

Hmm, I didn't realise that there F-1s who couldn't get SSNs. I guess this is because everyone I know on F-1 is a grad student (who can get SSNs if they're paid to be grad students, as most are).

I think it's annoying sometimes that you are DEFINITLY older and have to show ID, especially in cases like you're out having a nice dinner with your SO and you have to show ID, and something like that happens "GC not valid, drink a coke instead". Argh!

So you roll up to the bar, you're with a big party, you want to buy a beer, and you show your GC and the guy behind the bar just stares at you and says "WTFeck is that?"

Smooth.

All this trouble going through a system that 17% of americans would FAIL and we can't even get a beer afterwards :-D

Isn't the simple answer to this just to get a Drivers license or state ID? Surely it would save a lot of hassle.

My husband has no issues because....he uses his FL driver's license!!

If you have the green card, you can get a state ID, so there's no reason people need to get so upset about this - most people do not recognize a green card, and while most of the people who won't take it probably are morons - I worked (when I was in high school, thank gourd) at grocery stores and drug stores where we had to card people and the fear of being stung and losing your job is constantly hanging over your head if you forget to ID or accept a fake ID as valid, etc. So I don't completely misunderstand where the clerks are coming from - it will be easier for immigrants with a green card, and the people on the other side of the counter/table/wherever to just show a state ID. My husband never uses his green card as ID because if you are able to get a state ID, it's unnecessary.

Well, the confusing part for me here is that before I had my green card and showed my passport the guy at CVS said he wasn't allowed to sell me anything, because it was not an American ID. Now I do have my green card and am waiting for my SSN, in order to get a state ID,I can't use that as a valid ID either.
