Green card no valid ID?

We had a very unpleasant experience at a Carrabba's when James tried to get a glass of wine. The waiter said he had to show James's EAD to his manager (he didn't have the greencard yet) and when he came back said it wasn't a valid ID. James also had his UK license, but that wasn't good enough either. Apparently in Alabama the only valid ID's to buy alcohol are state ID's, driving licenses (only USA ones), passports, and military ID's. Who honestly carries around their passport? We made a big stink and got really annoyed about it and got coupons to the restaurant :P He's never had a problem buying alcohol before in the year he's been here. He will get his Alabama license soon though, but I still agree with the if it's ok for the government why isn't it ok for anyone else!!

Edited to note that I got so mad about the whole issue I even called up the state of Alabama's alcohol licensing board to find out the official rules, and obviously I was wrong about EAD or Greencard being valid ID's so I felt the tiniest bit bad for chewing out the restaurant, but I still think the whole law is completely absurd!

I was questioned about my Greencard in a liquor store.... they would not accept it as ID... when I asked why I was told "it must be fake because its not green and it does not say it is a greencard" it was easier and quicker to us my MA drivers license....

Oh that's so weird! Do they also have a law about which side of road to tie your horse up on?

Yeah we got cited on that one once as well ;) I certainly think that alcohol law is one that should be reformed; greencards are pretty complicated looking after all with that fancy thing on the back (certainly not any less difficult to forget an a state ID I would think!) and they look official to me. Thankfully most places are ignorant on the law and will take his EAD or greencard!

Yesterday my husband and I went to Safeway to buy a bottle of wine.

They always ask for both people for ID.

My husband shows his driver's license and I show my Green Card, happt that I don't have to carry my passport around ( they always founf it hard to fing my DOB)

The girl behing the cash register says that my card isn't a valid ID and as a foreigner I need to show my passport.

Only because my husband was paying she allowed us to take the wine home ( I'm 31 by the way, so I don't look much like a minor either, my husband is even 5 yrs yonger than I :hehe: )

A couple of months ago, another guy at CVS told me he couldn't sell me any wine, because he would get in trouble for selling it to someone without a state ID, so what's happening here???

That's bull. A green card is a valid ID. Now, for anything needing an address, you would need a state ID or DL.

I work for Old Navy. We accept green cards as valid ID. She just didn't know what she was doing.

It varies from state to state on what actually is a legal ID for alcohol buying, so it may not have been valid in the OP's state. Like I posted, they aren't valid in mine (Alabama) which I think is completely idiotic, but hey, it's the law :P

I was in Walmart one day behind some like 70 something year old Mexican man who couldn't speak english, and was trying to buy a pack of cigarettes. She asked for ID and he showed the green card. She couldn't find his DOB on there, and he didn't know what she was asking, so she refused to sale them to him. He already had one pack rolled up in his sleeve, and there is no way she thought he was under 18... but she would NOT sell him... technicalities.. Does each state issue a fact sheet to those licensed to sell/serve alcohol on acceptable forms of ID? I suppose if a greencard/PR card isn't on it then the person would assume they can't accept it as valid ID. In Ontario (Canada) the province issued such factsheets to those selling tobacco and alcohol and our Ontario health cards (which bore our photo, signature and DOB) could not be used as a valid form of ID to purchase these items because it didn't appear on the list.

I wonder if it's the same here?

Some retailers input the DOB into the register when you purchase tobacco or alcohol. When someone is OBVIOUSLY of age, they usually just punch in a made up date instead of asking for ID. Don't see why she couldn't just punch in a dummy date. Geesh.

It's interesting 'cos before I got my GC, I tried to buy alcohol at a restaurant, and gave my EAD card as ID. The waitress said it wasn't valid and called the manager, who also said the same thing. It was kindof embarassing 'cos people at the restaurant stared at me, thinking I was trying to give a fake ID or something. I ended up ordering iced tea instead. Like other people have said, just get a state ID or driver's license and save yourself the trouble of having to explain what a GC is to people who are ignorant.

As a side note to this, I did carry around Andre's passport. It was the only ID he had before the greencard. Even though I stressed about losing it, I felt it was necessary. It is now safely stored in our safe deposit box.
