I thought that Canadians who have visa applications in process could only visit for 90 days out of every 180 (unless otherwise indicated by the officer, obviously). Is it actually 6 months out of every year? Because if that's the case, my husband can probably stay here until we hear about his interview rather than having to go home in October. And that would make us both very happy.

I haven't seen anything to that effect.

I do know that if a CBP officer doesn't give you an end date to your visit, you can stay up to 6 months on that particular visit as a Canadian citizen.

Actually I was going to ask the CDn POE dude a question!! When I came into Saskatoon, the Cdn Customs dude asked if was Going to be working while in Canada, my answer was only if beer drinking counted as work!! But after I was cleared and walking to my bags, I was wondering why he asked that question. If I wanted to work, I see no reason why I could not. Maybe he just wasnt paying attention to my passport??

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Would I be the dude you'd like to ask? lol. Don't really know why he asked? Your a Canadian citizen and have every right to work in Canada if you so chose. Did the "customs dude" look young? Summer time is notorious for summer students that are full of knowledge, wisdom, experience and 2 weeks of training. <_<Advice to all..... if you are seeking advice or info from a Canadian POE in the summertime make a specific request to speak with a regular officer and not a summer student.

Sounds like a classic summer student hire. ;)
