How does health insurance work after my fiancee arrives?

I have healthcare through the healthcare.gov marketplace. The government pays for some/most of my monthly insurance cost. When my fiancee arrives here, and before she gets her green card, will she be able to join my plan or get her own insurance? I'm concerned since I believe this is considered government assistance and from my understanding of the I-864, the government won't provide any assistance to her? Would I no longer get deductions on my health insurance if she joins my plan?

Presumably you are talking about tax credit

Paying for health insurance is something you’ll have to plan for in your overall plan of how you’ll support an immigrant.

Thats what I'm trying to figure out. if I'm able to add her to my current plan with the credits or not. Would adding her mean I no longer will be eligible for the credits?

No one here will know the details of your individual plan.  You’ll have to call the plan administrator and ask.

Sure there's lots of ways.

Google "Health Insurance (your state)" and see if she is eligible or look for a local Health Insurance broker in person to guide her.

When my then fiance arrived, I was getting my insurance through the marketplace. We got married and he was able to get a policy there, too, even though he was still waiting for his social security card to arrive. Some states have their own rules. In NJ, we go through getcoveredNJ rather than healthcare.gov. The best thing you can do is call the number on healthcare.gov's website and speak with an agent. They're very accessible and helpful and will tell you how to apply in your state

I think many of us initially enroll our spouses through a workplace plan.   That’s what I did, and now my husband has had his own employer-based insurance, for years.

I'm self-employed, so that isn't an option for me

Well, maybe she will get a job that offers health insurance.

well.. not until she is allowed to work. Last I checked it will likely be around ~6 months until she can start working once she arrives due to work authorization and green card applications being slow to process.

It shouldn't affect your eligibility. Again, call them. They can tell you everything you need to know. 1-800-318-2596
