Applying for N400 with planned travel

Hi,

 

My spouse is currently eligible to apply for naturalization via N400 (we still have a pending I-751 removal of conditions, 4 year extension). We have travel planned from roughly 12/8/2023-1/5/2024 and 1/20/2024-2/20/2024. We would like to start the process but are worried the interview may get scheduled for a time when we are out of the country. We would like to know...

 

1. What are the potential risks/delays for rescheduling the interview if we are out of the country?

2. Would you recommend trying to schedule the application in a way that makes it very likely we are in the country for the interviews (details below)? Or would it be better to just wait until we are back to start the process?

 

For #2, we would probably apply around Nov 1, expecting the biometrics appt to be 2-3 weeks out, and then hoping that the interview doesn't get scheduled for our 1/20-2/20 travel.

Personally, I would wait until you are back.  When my wife applied in January 2018, she had a planned trip for February.  We had planned on it taking 6-12 months, but it came much faster.  Luckily it lined up for her and she was back before the interview as rescheduling interviews is a royal pain.

Another vote for waiting until after travel is complete before submitting the N-400.

IT Professional- Retired- Web Site Design, Hardware Maintenance, Compound Pharmacy Software Trainer, On-site go live support, Database Manager, App Designer.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Look here https://www.visajourney.com/timeline/citlist.php?cfl=&op5=5,10,11 (use the filter to see the info for your CIS office). This will give you a fairly-reliable picture of what the wait times are. Knowing this, plan accordingly.
