Was it an Israeli raid, as has been claimed in a number of sources. Most likely. He was a leader of a terrorist organization and on Israel’s most wanted list. Good riddance.

But wait a moment. The IDF usually doesn’t comment or claim responsibility for this sort of thing, yet they made a big splash about the hit on the Hezbollah leader in Lebanon, which is a little odd. Why make it obvious about an attack on Hezbollah in Beirut, which is as close to a run-of-the-mill operation as you can get, yet keep quiet on a hit in Tehran?

You see, taking out a prominent terrorist in the capital city of the biggest state supporter of terrorism against Israel is infinitely more frightening to Israel’s opponents than an air strike in Beirut. It shouts “Any time, anywhere!” to those who would sponsor and perpetrate acts of terror, so why not make it known who carried out the hit?

The question not asked is who else stands to benefit from the death of Ismail Haniyeh? As one of the senior negotiators for a ceasefire, his death will make that infinitely more difficult to achieve. So who profits by having the Gaza conflict continue without resolution? Who needs to keep IDF forces in the South of the country?

Hezbollah and Iran.

I have not seen any claim by Israel and yes he had lots of enemies.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Here's a comment lifted from the Jerusalem Post article.  I like and agree with the second sentence of the second paragraph:

"The Ayatollah and Sinwar and Nashrallah along with the rest of Hamas and the IRGC and Hezbollah now must be shaking in their excrement.  They now know nobody is safe anywhere anymore.

"For Kamala Harris and the Democrats they just lost one of their favorite foreign allies.  For the Biden administration soon they won't have anyone left to try to force Israel to surrender to.  For Netanyahu he's one step closer to eliminating Hamas militarily and politically.  For the remaining Hamas fighters in Gaza this is not only devastating but must be a signal they're near the end."

I understand that Iran is being suspected of meddling in the US election.  Any guess as to who they are trying to help?

Iran to Israel:  You'll Pay For This 'Cowardly Act'

Define cowardly.  Does it mean 'striking the head of a terrorist organization in the capital of the terrorist state that sponsors it'?  Or could it possibly mean 'raping and slaughtering hundreds of civilians and butchering babies who couldn't fight back against the psychopaths that the terrorist organization controls'?

We should really define terms, you know.

Anyway, Iran issued a Mom He Hit Me Back! response to the humiliating assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in their capital, where the IRGC apparently failed yet again:  [...]

A Funny Thing Happened When a Hamas Leader Went to Sleep Last Night; He Blowed Up Real Good

When I first read that Hamas' top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran last night, my first thought was that a Mossad assassination team had snuck in, done some dirty work that needed doing, and then snuck back out.  But no — it was so much better than that.

Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighters snuck into Iran's airspace undetected and expertly fired what must have been a small-diameter smart bomb or precision right into Haniyeh's guest residence in Tehran, killing just him and his bodyguard.

I doubt Haniyeh even had enough warning to wake up in time to hear his impending death.  Tehran promises revenge, yadda yadda yadda, but can't even defend its own capital.

Jerusalem remains mum about the whole thing, naturally, but I imagine they went in with a flight of two F-35I Adir stealth fighters to get in close with another pair of F-15I Ra'ams nearby for backup.  Or maybe Israeli jamming pods are so good that stealth fighters weren't needed, and it was just the longer-ranged F-15Is that reached out and touched someone last night.  [...]

If you are a terrorist leader, a known sponsor of terror, or just someone who is on a hit list somewhere, this should scare the living daylights out of you 💀

Reports from the IRGC say that it was a bomb planted in the apartment months ago that killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Interesting read.  With the targeting of the Hezbollah leader and the Hamas leader in places they thought were relatively safe, I agree with @Pooky, the antagonists in the ME and in particular Iran, and Lebanon must be shaking in their boots.

Hezbollah has made a fatal mistake Officials within the IDF are calling for escalation

Yet now, Hezbollah finds itself in a deeply precarious situation. The group initially denied Saturday’s strike — perhaps unsurprisingly given that they killed not Jewish soldiers but Druze children. They realise that this is bad for them. Nasrallah must also know that the blame for further escalation now lies with Hezbollah: the consensus is that the group fired heavy rockets at an IDF base on Mount Hermon, above Majdal Shams, but that one of the rockets overshot the target.

During the 2006 Israel-Lebanon War, which began after a cross-border Hezbollah attack led to the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers and the killing of eight others, Israel devastated large parts of south Lebanon. Afterwards, Nasrallah declared that, had he known that Israel would have reacted so ferociously, he never would have countenanced such a raid. Yet he also repeatedly boasted that Hezbollah had “won” the war. (As a friend in Beirut later remarked to me: “Any more ‘victories’ like that and we won’t have a country left.”)

Why wait? The irony of terrorists living with the nightmare of not knowing whether their next safe house is, in fact, safe, can only spread fear amongst those whose trade is fear itself. 🥶

One problem with Islam is the "win-win" nature of war and terrorism:  they get a guaranteed ticket to Paradise if they kill infidels and survive, and they get automatic admission to Paradise if they're killed and become martyrs.
