I just got my interview time for my naturalization application and need to travel abroad for work a few days later. Does anyone have any experience with doing your interview + test but asking for the ceremony later(thats when you give up your Green card right?)? Or do I need to reschedule my interview? I will be travelling a lot abroad next year so would love to get it done now so it doesn't interfere even more later.

Thank you for any insight

Do you know if your field office does same-day oath or not?

Unless that field office offer same-day oath, the oath ceremony will be at least 2-3 weeks away.

My office (Los Angeles) do offer same day oath. Work trip is just a week and a half roughly. Interview is on the 27th and I'm supposed to leave November 1-12 ish

No reason to delay. Contact DOS to request an appointment for new passport due to urgent travel after you taking the oath.

Explain your situation to the IO and request an oath at a later time.  If you are doing a name change, you won't be able to do a same day oath to my knowledge.

Good Luck!

Thank you! They won't give me any problems if I do? I'm not doing a name change (already did when I got my green card!)

If the situation cannot be helped, my advice is that you have waited all this while for this, You cannot afford to have it messed up....talk to your HR see if they can do something about your work trip.

The problem you will face is getting a US passport quickly after the oath ceremony.  Even with a legitimate need for upcoming travel abroad, appointments at a US passport agency are very difficult to get.  Do more research on that so you will be prepared.  After the oath ceremony you will need a US passport to re-enter the US.

Depending on urgency/priority level of your travel outside USA - I would suggest you keep your interview date. Very few USCIS field offices offer same day (interview & oath taking ceremony) - Usually, it's interview first and a two/three/four weeks later Oath taking ceremony. I just had gone thru the process, my Interview was in mid June 2023 & oath taking was in first week of August 2023. It's your call (to change the interview date).

Thanks & good luck
