Selection of 'field office' for AOS for K1 visa holder

Hi everyone!

 

(Caveat: I am planning ahead as my fiancée is still in her home country of India and soon to attend her K1 interview)

 

After my fiancée (K1 visa) and I get married, we will be doing the AOS by filling I-485. Since, our address during filling will be in California, we will be mailing it to the USCIS Chicago lockbox.

However, after a few months of filing our I-485, we intend to change our address. Maybe move to the state of New York.

 

How will this change in our residential address, a few months after the I-485 filing, impact the 'Field Office' that gets selected for our GC interview ?

Each unique address in the U.S. is assigned a primary USCIS field office. So the case will likely be re-assigned to a new field office

Is it correct to say that the field offices are where the biometrics and any interview are happen?

If so, makes sense that the field office will change to be closer to the applicant’s residential address.

Biometrics are done at service centres .. Some are USCIS managed, others are outsourced to private companies .. field offices conduct interviews

Biometrics are completed at Application Support Centers more often than not.

Yes and no. 

Biometrics, as above. 

Interviews are at Local Field Offices.

Both are based on your zipcode primarily. You can look your LFO up on the office locator website at the bottom using your zipcode.

 

So remembering that it is law that any immigrant (and non immigrant) must update their address of residence with USCIS within 10 days of moving, moving may greatly affect your processing times. Positively or negatively.

 

Moving from a fast moving LFO to a slow moving LFO or from a slow moving LFO to a fast moving will change your experience.

Also, noting that if you've already been scheduled for an interview at your old LFO and then move, canceling your spot may affect you as well when you need to be rescheduled at a new LFO.

 

Moral of the story:

1. It's to your advantage to leaen how to and to monitor your estimated wait at your LFO on the website. 

2. Moving complicates things. Address changes aren't USCIS's strong suit.

Sometimes this is correct and sometimes  it is not correct.

 

Examples I am personally familiar with: 

 

* Denver has a separate ASC for biometrics and a field office for case interviews

 

* San Jose has biometrics and case interviews at the field office
