Ugh, I was so happy that we got approved in a relatively timely manner but its been almost 3 weeks and my fiance has yet to receive package 3. I e-mailed a letter to the embassy and also gave them my fiance's new number. I haven't heard a thing. I have tried calling but it just ends up sounding busy. My fiance has also called numerous times and runs into the same thing. Can he just go the embassy (its a 6 hour bumpy bus ride) and inquire about it? He is under the impression that you need permission or some sort of appointment to even enter the embassy. We are so close and I am looking forward to completing the process soon. I am feeling frustrated. Sigh....lets hope it happens this week.

Maybe you can contact VJ member maya62 for advice, she has experience with Nepal.

I would say have him download Packet 3 forms from the Consulate website, fill them out then go to the Consulate in person and present them. I would think if you have the NVC number, they would let him into the Consulate. They might even give him the interview date right then and there; Nepal is VERY fast with interviews! Good luck!

YAY! I was finally able to get a hold of them last night and he is going to Kathmandu tomorrow to pick up the papers!

According to http://www.ekantipur.com, the first meeting of the constituent assembly will be at 11:00 on May 28 - 3 days after I arrive. Like the first time when I arrived in Nepal(June '01) I will be witnessing history being made - I just hope it all goes peacefully.

KATHMANDU, May 12 - Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has called the first meeting of the recently elected constituent assembly (CA) on May 28.

Pm Koirala called the meeting as per act 69 of the interim constitution.

The meeting will begin at 11 am on the same day at Birendra International Convention Centre, New Bansehwar in the capital.

The date was finalised after consultations between the PM and the senior leaders of the parties elected in the CA.

The CA meeting has been able to garner widespread concern especially because it is expected to decide on the fate of the monarch.

All the parties elected to the CA have already reached an agreement to declare the country a federal democratic republic through the first CA meeting

Very exciting PR!! I have had that feeling too (of witnessing history being made) each time I've gone to Nepal. It is a very exciting time to be there.

I second Eileen's wish for a peaceful first meeting of the CA. And a happy reunion with tapaaiko mutu! Looks like you're leaving in a week... lucky duck!

Please do send update(s) from Ktm if/when time allows... we'd love to hear how you're getting on and what the general mood is, too.

Exactly 12 days from now I will be leaving... I already have most of my stuff packed. I am just curious, when you have gone to Nepal how did you handle the H2O situation? I have drank bottled water in the past but I feel so guilty doing so - have also used purification tablets but they seem expensive. Govi's family has a water filter but I dunno if it gets all of the nasties. I came down with Giardia last year and don't want to repeat it... There is a website by a doctor who has practiced in Nepal and specializes in high altitude medicine - rather than any fancy commercial filters he recommends using iodine - 10% solution, 4 drops per liter. For additional protection he says you can use coffee filters. Especially if we go to Manang/Mustang I want to keep waste to a minimum. The website is http://www.high-altitude-medicine.com.

And yes of course I will post updates as soon as I can - you might not hear from me for a few days though.

Oooooh... I'm really happy for you (and a little jealous, too ) Totally understand, you will have lots of laundry to do upon arrival!

I feel guilty drinking bottled water, too, especially outside of Ktm (I think some of the plastic does actually get recycled in the Ktm Valley).

Last time we went, we took SIGG water bottles and Katadyn Micropur tablets (1 tab/liter, 30 tabs $13.95 here: http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___81896 ) It does get giardia and crypto and doesn't taste too bad. Haven't tried iodine. Check this out: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11990150 If you do decide to go with iodine, I've heard that you can add vitamin C (ascorbic acid) to the water after treatment to help remove the taste of the iodine.

I've had good luck with Katadyn, and the SIGG bottles are Swiss made specifically to avoid the leaching properties of plastic water bottles... they're lined metal and well-tested from what I've read. And as light as any Nalgene bottle, BUT you can NOT put boiled (hot) water in them without letting it cool first. We've used boiled water in a pinch in the village.

And we drink a fair amount of tea and/or hot lemon on trek.
