We just received our GC, our daughter is unmarried, over 21 and in the US on F1 International student visa working on OPT. She is eligible to apply for STEM extension in December which will give her a total of 3 years on OPT. We would like to sponsor her for a family based GC, is the timeline for sponsoring a child who is already in the US the same (6 years or so)? If we begin the process now will she still be able to extend OPT to STEM OPT in the fall? She is a Canadian citizen.

Not sure where you are getting 6 years.

 

Timeline does not change according to where she is, she needs to wait for her Priority Date to become current.

 

OPT and being sponsored for an immigrant visa are not related.

 

She should not get married, well a USC would be OK.

We are new GC holders and would like to sponsor our daughter (unmarried over 21), who is currently in the US working on F1 OPT. We are Canadian. Is the the shortest path? Or is the sibling (over 21 US Citizen sister) sponsor faster? Since she is in the US would it be change of status so she would get an EAD sooner? I know when we applied for family based GC we got our EAD then final approval a few months later. Thanks

It won't be fast...even for a parent to petition her.   First step is to file an I-130, then wait years until a visa number is available.  Here is the September 2023 Visa Bulletin.  A sibling petition to visa would talk 15+ years.  Adjustment of Status after being petitioned by either a parent or sibling would be unlikely.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Your daughter cannot adjust status as the priory date (PD) would not be current. It’s the same for siblings of US citizens. PD is the date when the immigrant petition was filed.

Assuming she has no intention of marrying then you should sponsor.

 

Adjusting, well she would need to keep her F1 status for a very long time, I have seen it done.
