Harley riders are one of the last of the leftover taboos of the '60s. "Hey man, they're just doing their thing!"

To criticize them not only invites scorn for the criticism, but there's also an implicit physical threat. Some might say "but you're being unfair to all Harley riders for the actions of the few." No.

What possesses a person to go plunk down between $7 and 15 thousand (or more) for what is, in most respects, an old-fashioned, overweight, under-performing motorcycle? It's not because they're such great touring bikes (BMW and Guzzi are FAR better for that). It's not because they're practical, or good for carrying a bag of groceries, or economical on gas, or anything else. It's because Harleys offer an image that appeals to the insecure.

The "American iron/these colors never run/what'm I rebelling against?--whadda you got?/my bike's bigger than your bike/yeah--I could kick your a$$ and do your ol' lady" thing. Even though most Harley riders today have no better fighting skills or sex skills than your average minivan driver. It's all about the IMAGE. Harley riders are simply on the opposite end of the same scale as drag queens. Drag queens try to convince that they're something they're not, which requires an exaggeration of all of the superficial aspects of femininity. Harley riders are just on the other end of it.
