Lot of misconceptions about India.

People are shocked when my wife order a Burger, or Steak at a restaurant because she's Indian, most people think Indians are vegetarians, and specially don't eat beef. But this is mostly attribute to Hindu, my wife is Christian there are Christian who do decide to be vegetarian but they can eat meat and all.

People from abroad a time think there's a magic tree here when you shake it money fall down on the floor, when my wife got here she saw how Hard working american are, because back in INDIA they always talking to to as as lazy bum

Just have to watch Rick Mercer , Talking to Americans on Youtube, and you can see the kind of misconceptions some Americans have about Canada. WE're not talking about "stupid" Americans either *sigh*

I'm sure the way he asks questions throws them off too.

 Do you have to rub it in like that? Next you'll be telling us that they still make real, actual beer there, too...

Well, now that you mention it... :hehe:

They're probably about as stupid as some European misconceptions about America...Texas in particular. Oh, the stupid questions I was asked. It goes both ways y'all.

What misconceptions and prejudices do you experience from people about your homecountry after you arrived in the US?

I am always amazed how people assume that I must be sooooo happy to be finally in the US, if in reality, the only reason why I am here and wanted to come here is to be with my husband.

I even got asked one time how we communicated while we were apart and when said per email, phone, text messages,...I earned a surprised look, like they couldn't believe we have that kind of technology...in GERMANY??????!!!!

Oh you know the usual, we are still sucking off the British teet.. that we have nothing intellegent to say politically or globally, that we are doing nothing to support "the war on terror" and that we are all hippy tree hugging socialists (well the last bit is certainly true I guess)

don't forget the cold weather comments!

My personal favourite question was "is this the first time you've worn sandals? Does it get warm enough in Canada to wear them?"

And H_A, I hate to break it to you, but there are LOTS of non-idiotic citizens of the United States of America who ask these kinds of questions with alarming frequency.

Actually, I froze my nuxts off when I was working near St. Johns, NF

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .

Well, I would certainly stand in line to buy actual bread here, if it was possible.

Generally I have to say people know more about Germany than I thought. I was positively surprised!

The only thing that really bothers me is the fact that people (after asking where I'm from) keep saying "Oh, I'm half - German too". Too bad they don't speak the language and I have yet to meet somebody who actually visited Germany! I would never say I'm half-something if I didn't speak at least a few words and had visited my "homecountry" at least once.

Conditional Permanent Resident since September 20, 2006

Conditions removed February 23, 2009

I am extraordinarily patient,

I think it shows how much we believe anyone with a microphone in their hand. I loved the boy who finally questions him. only idiots and children know the Emperors has no clothes

I'm going to take a wild guess the results of "Toronto is the capitol of Canada" experiment would be the same in a lot of countries.

yeah, probably but you would think the US would know more about their neighbors to the North.... and just to clarify I am sure the are lots of Americans who do know a lot about Canada

I know a lot of ppl, including myself say that kind of stuff. I never thought how it actually sounds until now. You have a good point.
