Some people from work were shocked when I told them I didn't know what a chimichanga was. I told them it was becuase I was colombian, not mexican. I honestly don't think they understood what I meant by that and they still think of me as mexican.

 I am Mexican but never heard about Chimichangas before I came to the US, my boss asked me if I knew how to do them and left me all confused (I am still not sure on what they are) maybe they have them in another part of Mexico, I am from the North.

I think that most of this stereotypes are created by the movies.

If anyone has a snappy (not rude) comeback to "So how do you like living in the US?", we'd love some original responses.

"Love it".

Usually shuts them up and makes them feel happy at the same time. Win-win.

Good one!...I bet you that at least shuts people up and I can already see some very confuzzeled looks on their faces!

Chimichangas were invented in New Mexico or Arizona depending on who you believe (as opposed to Old Mexico :) ), so its hardly surprising that you've never heard of them!

I was asked last night if my husband likes living here in the States. I said yes. Then I was asked if he was proud of being Canadian? I answered yes again (I was beginning to wonder where this is leading). Then the reply was...."well, I just wondered how he felt about being an American (to which I interrupted and said he isn't yet, not for a few more years) since Canadians feel they're "above it all" to us Americans. To which I replied that I've not met a Canadian yet that thought he or she was "above it all" to us Americans. My husband isn't a snob, nor does he think he's superior to anyone whatever they're ethnicity may be. Sheesh, some of the things people feel inclined to say.

I usually say "it's different". Which usually satisfies the person asking.

I totally don't mind if people asking me tons of questions about how life in Germany is or even why I would want to keep my german citizenship, I believe that's a valid question considering that I plan to live in the US permanently.

If you ever do go for US citizenship, make sure you have an approved "Beibehaltungsantrag" for your German citizenship. I sort of missed that thinking that once a German, always a German. Oh well, when it bothers me enough, I might try to find a way to regain my German citizenship without having to move back. Germany ain't exactly the place to be for an interracial couple. I can take the visits but I wouldn't expose Nani to living with the ignorance outside of the major metro areas.

When did Germany introduce e-voting??? Everytime I voted was with good old paper and pen. Last time I voted was when Angela Merkel became chancellor.... Man, only 18 months in the US and I don't know what's going on back home....

Sometimes I am annoyed by some people asking weird questions about my country... Like at my new work: "Isn't Germany right next to Yugoslawia?" Granted, that came from a person who did not know what a "Called War" was.... I then had the honor to explain to her why Germany was devided after World War II.... But oh well, can't change some people's education.

Got a funny one from today though: I paid with my CC and they clerk checked my ID (green card). He said: "Oh you are from Germany... Which part of Germany.... The American or German part of Germany?". I was perplexed, thought he joked, realized he wasn't joking, and answered him I which part of Germany I was from (hmmm the Mongolian part? ;) )....

I had to listen to stuff like "are you still standing in line for bread?" or "do you live in houses"? and of course everything about the Hitler Times.

LOL wouldn't know a time people had to stand in line for Bread unless it was WAAAAAAY before my time  to the houses I won't comment and I can't hear anything about the Hitlertimes nomore because I wasn't born yet and my parents weren't born yet!!! even my 6 year old back then was confronted with Hitler in school by a classmate, that we would have a Naziflag flying in Germany and our Flag shows the Reichs Cross. Now I had to explain a 6 year old about Hitler

This NPD is not the initial Nazi party ...they might have the same motives and reasons though...

I heard they are hard to get approved, like there must be some kind of hardship!? Or you have toprove special ties to Germany!?

I had to listen to stuff like "are you still standing in line for bread?"

Standard response ought to be: "No. But unlike here, they still make real, actual bread in Germany."

 Do you have to rub it in like that? Next you'll be telling us that they still make real, actual beer there, too...
