The F-35B is so stealthy, the USMC has lost an one after it’s pilot ejected safely and are asking for help trying to find it 🤣

I have questions.

 

Like why was it on autopilot?

Why did the pilot eject if the plane is functional and could be flying itself?

Why is there no way to like detect it?

 

We've had jets patrolling the area like crazy this weekend. I'm guessing they are looking for something or someone keeps getting into the NOTAM/TFR area.

It has a Transponder but the Transponder was defective.

 

I remember reading about the Meteor, and early fighter jet and the large percentage of airframes lost when it did not see that much Combat.

 

Back in WW2 Colorado seemed to be a favourite place for Bomber training, a lot of crashes, not sure they have found all of them. I suppose it is inevitable if you are on the edge with Aircraft design there is going to be a higher failure rate. We get a lot of high altitude low level stuff here.

 

When I was at School we used to go flying, RAF Chipmunks, very very old even then but tried and trusted. The last time I went the safety checks took forever, they had a crash and the student did not make it. You sat in the back and the pilot pulled the canopy back and went and then you had to do your bit.

There are a lot of questions, but the OP story did say something about a malfunctioning transponder.  Not surprising as you cannot expect everything to work on an $80 million+ piece of US military hardware.

It wouldn’t be the first plane to keep flying after the pilot ejected.

If something goes wrong with equipment like this, it is often the case  that the remaining planes will be grounded until the cause is determined. It can be days, weeks, or even months, if serious enough.
