Out of curiousity I looked at the cartoons in question, and IMHO they're not very well drawn and they're pretty heavy handed. Kind of like a Cox & Forkum cartoon, you know, worthless.

Editor Reflects on Denmark's Cartoon Jihad

In Aarhus, Denmark, an editor says the societal debate unleashed by his paper's controversial decision to publish political cartoons of the prophet Muhammad has justified his move. In the town, many residents are standing behind Jyllands-Posten.

The call came at five o'clock in the evening. A man warned the receptionist in English: There's a bomb in the building and it's going to go off in 10 minutes. A few seconds later, more than 200 employees -- editors, secretaries and printing staff -- fled the offices of Jyllands-Posten in Denmark's second-largest city, Aarhus. The police quickly turned up on the scene, as did the journalists, photographers and satellite trucks.

Bomb-sniffing dogs sleuthed through the editorial offices and the adjacent printing plant for traces of a bomb. A short time later, the police gave the all clear signal -- no bomb had been found.

It was the second bomb threat within 24 hours, ....

Still wonder why one would have the idea of drawing such cartoon? Draw it, put it in the paper and the bomb threats and gunmen and even threats against the lives of people completely unrelated to the actual event in question are as sure as the AMEN in the catholic church. I suppose if that wasn't so, the cartoons would have never been drawn to begin with. Brings me back to a point made earlier: Protest the alleged disrespect in a civil manner and we would never have had this row in the fist place.

if a danish newspaper had mocked the holocaust in a comic strip - and then a series of other european nations followed - Israel would be throwing a temper tantrum.

Your debate is acceptable. However, your attempt to make a personal insult is out of order.

No, your inferred holocaust denial and anti-semitism are out of order. This is a dispute between the secular but mostly Christian nations of Europe and the Muslim world. To insert a jab at Israel and Jews deserves ridicule.

It's maddening to watch moderate Muslims become subject of such racism from the West, yet allow the extreme elements to do their best to validate these views. You will always make a more effective argument if you moderate your rhetoric, stay on topic, and ground your points in reality.

Sadly, you are incorrect. Hate speech laws do tell newspapers what (not) to print in most Western nations. The threat of libel suits also restricts, but only in a civil manner.

The withdrawing of ambassadors is idiotic, but only because it serves to degrade the image of Islam. A dignified protest highlighting of the masses of moderate Muslims living happy lives in Europe and shaming the newspaper for such racism would have done so much. One would think Gandhi, Martin Luther King jr., and Joseph Welch would have shown the world how to get the West to back down.
