Piss Christ was actually an Andres Serrano piece, although Mapplethorpe gets blamed for it all the time. ;)

you don't believe history supports prophets - well does history support moses? if you don't believe moses is fact, that in and of itself negates the entire jewish existence......making the holocaust a moot point.

No, I don't believe history supports religion of any kind. But that's neither here nor there.

As for how that affects the Holocaust, it does not. Because Hitler's tactics could just as easily have applied to any other social grouping. In point of fact, it did. He did not target Jews only, but homosexuals and gypsies as well. Whether Judaism is a valid system of belief is not the point at all. Genocide is the point.

Poor guy.

*rolling eyes* Attack Jesus or mock Hindu images or make up a song making light of Jewish holidays and Moses.... and you're A-ok. Mock Mohd. and OMFG the world comes to an end.

Well, I think it should be pointed out that in the case of the Jewish religion, it's the Holocaust that is considered "sacred," rather than its holidays or prominent figures. Any questioning of or attempt to do objective studies of the Holocaust is a jailable offense in most European countries. (What about that much-lauded "freedom of speech," ET ? )

It seems that Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism are the only major world religions that can be mocked or insulted without much danger of reprisal.

The holocaust is not part of the Jewish faith. It was a mass murder. Objective studies are possible, but biased ones are not. Yes, some European nations wrongly ban holocaust denial. I support the freedom of one to declare oneself an idiot - a freedom you have exercised.

Also, wouldn't we have to ignore the daily anti-Israeli and anti-American cartoons in the Muslim press to make your point valid?

Sample from Egyptian Press

On the main topic, an independent newspaper in the increasingly xenophobic nation of Denmark published an inappropriate, racist cartoon. Ironically, as the newspaper painted all Muslims and their spiritual leader as terrorists, many in the Muslim world (home to the most xenophobic nations on this planet) have decided to paint all Danes and now Europeans as anti-Muslim. If the protest only took the form of the refusal of individuals to buy Danish goods, I would have no qualms with it and think it simply another display of ignorance that we have come to expect from many of the citizens and governments of the offended countries and territories.

But when governments withdraw ambassadors (imagine if America pulled-out their missions every time a newspaper made fun of it), violent protests hit the streets, gunmen storm foreign haunts in the West Bank looking for foreigners to beat-up or kill, and Islamic terrorists threaten to bomb capital cities, we enter a different realm - a realm in which at least one racist cartoon begins to gain credibility.

your going way off topic here - first and foremost - if you think history supports any religion of any kind - then you have negated the entire existence of the jewish population - and it is this very population that would scream and shout if newspapers across europe printed cartoons mocking the holocaust - it wouldn't be the homosexual or gypsy populations that would scream and shout.

.....someone mentioned that the prophet mohammed and the holocaust are two entirely different things. agreed. what needs to be understood here is that there is a group of people that hold the prophet in high esteem. as there is a group of people that hold dearly to them the holocaust - mocking either will raise the angers of these groups. that is the point - it is the fact that there are people who hold certain things in high regard, and mocking that very thing (regarldess of what it is, of whether it's real or fictional) will draw negative sentiments.

we live in a multicultural and global world - if we want to live together, we need to learn to be sensitive of the beliefs, cultures, and values of eachother on a global scale.

i agree - the reaction by some is uncalled for - and gives more credibility to the cartoon...........but the reaction doesn't justify the initial action - it was an insensitive cartoon done in poor taste.

Which, of course, necessitates carrying out disagreements and protests in a peaceful and civilized manner. Let's start there and we wouldn't have this debate. ;)

The cartoon was undoubtedly in poor taste and inappropriate, but freedom allows for those decisions, just as it would allow for a boycott. The actions beyond are the ones in quesiton.

No problem with people of the muslim faith saying 'those people are just stupid - what a bunch of morons - Im very insulted and offended' thats fine, thats fair, that's reasonable and no-one could deny them the right to say that and ask members to boycot the newspaper or publish cartoons about Danes in kind.

Calling for kidnap and other 'extreme' acts though, that's over-reacting -yes.

Is it too late to kill Salman Rushdie and undo this mess? ;)

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Your debate is acceptable. However, your attempt to make a personal insult is out of order.

BBC Shows Danish Paper's Cartoons Linking Muhammad to Terrorism

Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The British Broadcasting Corp. today showed cartoons linking Islam's prophet Muhammad to terrorism, saying it wanted to help viewers understand the controversy prompted by the original publication of the images in Denmark.

The drawings by Danish artists, televised today in the U.K. by the BBC One and BBC News 24 channels, were used ``responsibly'' and ``in full context to give audiences an understanding of the strong feelings evoked by the story,'' the BBC said in a statement read over the phone by a spokeswoman.

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Palestinian gunmen shut down the European Union's office Thursday in Gaza City, Palestinian security sources said, demanding an apology in a row over European newspapers running cartoons featuring the prophet Mohammad.

The gunmen left a notice on the EU office's door that the building would remain closed until Europeans apologize to Muslims, many of whom consider the cartoons offensive.

Mask-wearing members of the militant group Islamic Jihad and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of former Palestinian ruling party Fatah, fired bullets into the air, and a man read the group's demands.
