you guys are missing the point here - muslims get made fun off all the time - comedy central, tv shows - and we get portrayed as dumb terrorists all over the media...guess what, we suck it up and move on.

however, there are fine lines that AREN'T meant to be crossed. for example, what if someone published a comic of someone burning/urinating/desecrating a cross - do you expect the christian population to sit back and say 'oh yeah, freedom of speech - let it be'...

similarly - by depicting these figures - you are desecrating what is sacred to muslims...

however, there are certain lines you just don't cross.......ofcourse you can - but be prepared for the consequences - such as people demonstrating, complaining, etc.

If the 'consequences' stopped at people demonstrating and complaining, that would be great. That's typically how observant Christians respond to percieved media attacks on their religion (anyone remember the "art" display with a statue of Jesus immersed in human urine?). That's ok. That's how it's done in a free country. Let's hope it stays at that.

That line has already been crossed and the most Christian groups were able to do was protest, boycott and get the piece thrown out of one art gallery and into another.

i too hope muslims can react to this rationally, and not go ape sh!t and commit the usual totally random acts of violence we tend to succumb to.......

yes, i recall maplethorpe - had a depiction of jesus immersed in urine in an art gallery in nyc in the early 90's...those offended reacted appropriately.

so what is it that we're shocked about here - the fact that the muslim community is upset over this - or the fact that they have over-reacted?

secondly - the same principle that you are hiding behind when it comes to mocking mohammed, god - which is freedom of speech - should apply to someone who denies the holocaust - why should denial of the holocaust be a jailable offense? does that not infringe upon one's rights to free speech?

double standard there, no?

No. Not at all. The holocaust is a historical fact, an even that actually took place, an event for which tons of physical evidence exists. The holocaust is not something that you believe in or don't. It's something that actually took place. It's well documented (Germans have a way of documenting everything). There is no physical evidence of the existence of any God or prophet. All that is believe and faith and not much more. Makes all the difference, IMO...

Out of curiousity I looked at the cartoons in question, and IMHO they're not very well drawn and they're pretty heavy handed. Kind of like a Cox & Forkum cartoon, you know, worthless.

The latter. Muslim governments have actually called on Danish ambassadors over this! Palestinian groups have actually threatened to kidnap Danes over this! This is already well beyond boycotts and protests.

you really feel comfortable supporting that if one denies certain parts of history - they should be jailed?

i believe what the nutty palestinians have done - kidnap, is an over-reaction.

however, recalling ambassadors is about the extent of the pressure a country like saudi arabia can flex in such regards - and if they feel this is that important to them - let it be.

....if major publications in the united states mocked hindu gods - i feel india has every right to pull its ambassador in protest to send a message.....not an over-reaction - whether or not its a smart move is ofcourse debatable.

you don't believe history supports prophets - well does history support moses? if you don't believe moses is fact, that in and of itself negates the entire jewish existence......making the holocaust a moot point.

Haha. The Indian diaspora always begs the Indian government to help them out with boycotts/protests like this. The Indian embassy doesn't even call them back. They'd rather have American business :P

Where did I say that? What I said was that mocking or denying the holocaust (which is a very real historic event) is not anywhere near the same as mocking or denying a figure of whatever faith, religion or whatnot (which, for all we know, is imagined to begin with).

whoa? first off - to stay on topic - if someone MOCKED the holocaust - it wouldn't go down well.

secondly - the same principle that you are hiding behind when it comes to mocking mohammed, god - which is freedom of speech - should apply to someone who denies the holocaust - why should denial of the holocaust be a jailable offense? does that not infringe upon one's rights to free speech?

1. Mocking the Holocaust

2. mocking Mohammed

They aren't even in the same ballpark.

However "The Producers" play was just done in Israel. A play with swastikas and the song "S pringtime for Hitler". No big outrage at all. That's tolerance.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
