I had a 10 year greencard

Per CBP, airlines are permitted to allow you to board on a flight to the US with an expired 10 year permanent resident card:

https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/2021-Dec/Reminder- LPR Boarding 20210305.pdf

That said, the general guide by CBP states "permanent resident card" and not "expired 10 year permanent resident card":

You may be allowed to board or you may not, depending on whether or not the airline is aware of the updated guide on LPRs.

I would suggest you try to get an emergency ADIT stamp from your local USCIS office.

File I-90 online and print out your extension letter directly from the Documents tab after payment. Good luck

I-90 extensions are for two years making the green card still expired as per OP post.

Another post suggested an adit stamp but if OP is traveling today that's also impossible to get.

Boarding foil is pretty straight forward and shouldn't take more than a week at the foreign country embassy.

This ^^^^^.  Since the I90 is an online service, as @little immigrant stated, you can print out the letter as proof.  CBP may give you a hard time if it is not the original watermarked version, but they should let you in.

USCIS Extends Green Card Validity Extension to 24 Months for Green Card Renewals

If your permanent resident card or conditional permanent resident card has expired and you have already applied to renew it or remove conditions, you may show your expired card along with your receipt notice as evidence of continued status. USCIS has revised language on receipt notices for Form I-90, Form I-751, and Form I-829 that extend the validity of a permanent resident card for 24 months.

In my opinion, the most diffucult task would be getting on the plane on the way back.

The OP should save the CBP link in case they need to educate any airline employees.  Unfortunately, the CBP Carrier Guide is still circa 2019 and has not been updated yet.

Thank you all for the feedback I landed in the UK and then spoke with a department at the airport for the airline I flew with they said that I would not have a problem boarding and did not see any issue as I had a 10-year green card. They would not stop me from boarding. I have sent a message to immigration as well to confirm if I need to do anything else.
