Hello,

I did my oath on Tuesday. From what I have read online people have been applying for passports almost immediately. The form asked for my SSN, can I use my 'old' one?

We were told at the oath that we need to wait 10 days for a new SSN. Should I go ahead and submit my passport application now, or do I need to wait until I have my new SSN?

Thanks

Thanks for your replies. I will go ahead and submit the passport app first.

Does the passport agency take my original copy of my citizenship certificate?

YMMV.  If applying through a post office, yes.  If applying through a Passport Office directly with an appointment, maybe not.  When my wife naturalized, she applied the day after her oath at the Detroit Passport Office, and they made a copy of her certificate, a supervisor approved the copy, and my wife was able to keep her original.  Now that was all pre-covid when you could walk in to a Passport Office, so I would plan to give up the original certificate.

Personally, I did the passport first because I had a passport appointment 2 days after my Oath. I received my passport exactly 10 weeks after applying then went straight to the SSA office to update my status. You don't get a new SSN, you keep your same SSN, they just update your citizenship status.

I waited 8 months to update my info with SSA (you never get a new SSN btw, it's always the same).

I applied for my passport about 2 weeks after my oath. Both passport and SSA went really smooth, no hick-ups (other than the fact that SSA didn't allow in-person service at the time due to the pandemic, hence why  waited 8 months for them to "open" so I could go in person).

If it was today, I'd do the SSA first as it's so quick and easy - I also changed my name when I became a citizen, so I used my certificate with the name change document to update my name with SSA. They asked for and took copies of absolutely everything, not just my passport (that had my new name on it, of course).

I did the passport right away at passport agency since I had urgent travel coming up. For that I got the original naturalization certificate returned together with the new passport (and passport card) the next day.

I waited a week or two to update the SSN since someone suggested it could take a few days for their systems to see the new status.

In addition to the above, if you have Global Entry/NEXUS you can head to a nearby enrollment office (no appointment needed) and show passport and naturalization certificate for them to input the new information, you can then request a replacement card online that shows your new citizenship status.

Passport received by office : 26th Sep

Passport shipped : 13th Oct

Pretty happy with that. Hopefully I will receive it soon along with my original oath certificate.

Feels a bit surreal that I am finally done with this process. 2018 K1 filed, Married 2019, US citizen 2023.

A little bit late to update this but my oath certificate came back to me 2 weeks following receipt of the passport
