@Verrou My green card is my ID so I showed them (supermarket (for alcoholic beverages) and the doctors office for a new patient registration) so they scanned it. I have a SSN I got it with the green card. I never heard about restricted SSN and idk if mine is. Probably not?

Why don't you just get an ID???? Really simple and has nothing to do with GC.

Take a few bills etc to prove residence and such. Take your PP too.

Not sure why you're flashing GC at supermarket...be careful because if it gets lost, you're in for a long ride.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Um, that's what this thread is about -- the OP is trying to get an ID/DL from the DMV.  Before I got my state ID (which also required me presenting my GC), my IDs acceptable in the US were only my GC and my passport.

You still have to present some other type of ID to get state ID/DL...that's exactly what the OP is trying to do.

OP also already explained that, since their green card is their ID, they used it at the supermarket to purchase alcohol.

I am still thrown off by a grocery store or doctor's office actually scanning a green card instead of just looking at it...but stranger things have happened.

Nope, OP cannot use their passport to get a state ID in Pennsylvania. For an LPR to get a state ID, Penn DMV accepts:

  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) – I-551
  • Passport or I-94 with I-551 stamp (temporary I-551)
  • Machine Readable Immigrant Visa (temporary I-551)
  • Reentry Permit I-327

Passport would only work if it had a valid temporary I-551 stamp.

if your SSN card has no extra word " valid for bla bla bla " that means u have unrestricted SSN card

going to SSA office wont help you. because SSA office wont give you that unrestricted SSN card if ur status is not clear

i will go back to DMV and talk with them. it happened to me to, and the DMV person said it's okay just wait for DHS to approve you, once the save check is clear, u will get ur DL. now my question : did ur DMV person say anything like that?  they cant just said " sorry ur out of luck good bye". if you are green card holder, they will help you. you are allowed to ask " how can you help me so i will get my learner permit?"

put ur A number and see what do they show : https://save.uscis.gov/save/app/client/ui/case-check

Hi Verrou,

Does it necessary to change the SS from restricted to unrestricted?

I never changed after getting my green card. Is that gonna impact either say in the future? What do you recommend?

I got an ID without GC..All I presented were forms to help prove residence eg bills and my foreign PP. And same time, I used same to apply for DL.

I didn't have GC then.

Good for you.  Too bad it doesn't work that way for the OP in Pennsylvania.  Nor did it work that way for me in Louisiana.

Yeah it was a smooth process, I only needed my EAD (and possibly foreign passport and SSN, don't remember about those two) to get a state ID, that was long before I became a greencard holder. California is easy, but they still required me to prove my status in the US (EAD was enough before getting a greencard).

Last time I checked, Texas is a different state than Pennsylvania. Different states, different rules.

Yes, if you don't want employer to keep asking you for GC and extension letter. And every time your GC or extension letter expires they freak out you're no longer eligible to be employed...

To avoid all this, show DL and unrestricted SS card once. No questions asked then.
