hi

fortunately I got my visa last week and I'm with my husband in US :D but from the second day, I got a nasty flu and last night ended up in emergency room because of a kind asthma attack! :dead:

the member of insurance company in my husband's work place told him that he can't add me to his insurance till August, at the time of his renewal. but afterward my husband talked to the company costumer service and they told him that my enterance to us as his wife is a kind of life-change event and he should be able to cover my insurance! we don't know what to do! and last night in ER I think cost a lot. Does anybody know what we can do about that? Also I would be grateful if anybody can give me some information about what we can do about my husband's insurance policy.

Thamk you

Wow, that is kind of unusual. Many plans allow changes during the year if it is a life event such as a marriage or divorce or birth of a child.

I had to use the ER a few years ago and I think for my hour and half stay they billed my insurance for about 3 grand!

jim is right .... most insurance companies do allow you to add/remove members of your family for: marriage/divorce, death, birth/adoption of a child.

as far as them covering your trip to the hospital ... i highly doubt that since you were not added at the time. maybe someone at his insurance company can do some fancy footwork and try to add you from your date of arrival.

best of luck to you!

GO!!!!!!!!

Ask your husband to go the his company HR department, or Benefit Dept. DON'T WAIST no time, Once you are married your spouse have 30 days from the date of the wedding to update his benefits. After the 30 days you have to wait for Open Enrollment around October, Being that you were not into the country over that 30 day you can ask HR to consider that.

Gone but not Forgotten!

My employer's insurance plan gave only a 30-day window after a life-changing event (marriage, divorce, birth/adoption of a child, or death) to add/remove a dependant to one's insurance. If you miss the 30 days, you have to wait until the next open enrollment (held only once a year.)

However, since my husband was not even in the U.S. until nearly a year after our marriage, the insurance company agreed to begin counting the 30 day period upon his actual arrival. Your insurance may allow the same flexibility. I notified them within a week of his arrival; however, his coverage did not actually go into effect until the first of the following month.

I cannot stress enough the need to notify insurance companies as soon as possible after a "life-changing event," and find out what their exact rules are, so you don't get left without coverage. Unfortunately, I strongly suspect that they will refuse to cover any expenses incurred before the actual date of activating the spouse's coverage, as they have no legal obligation to do so.

It's a tough situation when you need emergency medical care. Best of luck to you.

I already have my husband on my insurance .. just dont have my husband in the US. If you can't get it covered by insurance, call the billing department of the hospital. I was able to negotiate a $5 / month payment with our hospital here a few years back when I had a payment I could not make.
