I know my other half has been very depressed due to all of the time we have been apart not just with just being apart, but with life and work etc... So with out telling me he went to his family doctor this morning with all of his troubles and the dr has advised him to seek council and gave him two weeks off work and to get a membership at the gym and work out some of his frustration... What im worried about is with this being on record now with is Dr and going threw the K1 will this hurt us at the final stages of the interview?

I dont think it will as other members have informed me.. I am on incapacity benefit here in the uk and am currently not working and suffering from Depression, anxiety, agrophobia, panick attacks. Most of my depression has been to the fact i cant be with my baby either but i have other issues too. From what I have also read it seems at the medical stage the Dr will have to aska few questions to work out if the depression (mental illnes as it is called) will harm others or yourself. Im not suicidal and would never dream of it and i dont get so depressed enough to hurt another human being or animal so Im hoping im ok and will pass the medical. So basically, im hoping it wont effect the visa. Others might have some other advice:)

Relax :D it will not go against him at the medical stage, he was not put on any medication, the doctor did the correct thing and gave him a bit of time off from work and told him to work out at the gym, there should be more doctor's like the one your fiance has. Good luck with the process.

The Beneficiary when doing the medical, if the examiner thinks his depression is severe he can state he doesn't support the idea of this beneficiary going to US, but I'm thinking he'll only do that in extreme mental states.

I agree too. I would think that if he only was depressed on starting this process and not for his whole life that it wouldn't be a problem. If it was a problem I don't think they would be letting any of us into the USA!

Thanks to all that have replied, I do feel better now...Steve said that on his dr's note for work the dr only put stress and not depression, and hes never been seen for any depression issues other than today.. So his plans are going to get a membership in the am and the dr gave him some patches to stop smoking im sure my little basket case will be better soon, I asked him tonight what is that thats going to make you feel better and he just said being with you... So its just the " stress of being apart " thats got him down i think.Or as he would say IT"S DOING MY HEAD IN!!!....... again thanks to all the VJers.....Kelle

If anxiety and depression would pre-clude you from entering the U.S. then man we're ALL screwed !! BTW - I'm pretty sure your general medical doctor is going to be different from the one that you are going to get screened by for the consulate interview... I think we all need to see psychiatrists and send the USCIS, NVC and Consulate our bills for reimboursement when we're done !! :luv::lol:

If they were going to deny a visa to anyone who had ever suffered a situational depression, nobody would ever get one at all! It's only a problem if the person has ever been so suicidally depressed that they had to be hospitalised, and if they've ever attempted suicide. And even then you can still get a visa if you can prove to them that it was all in the past and you've been appropriately treated and you're not going to be a risk of being a public charge in the US.

It means bringing a letter from your treating doctor (psychiatrist or GP or whoever has looked after you) explaining your treatment plan (or prefereably how you don't need one any more and you're a perfectly sane human being)...

I was terrified that I wouldn't get my K1 visa because I was seeing a shrink for five years and suffer from anxiety etc, but in the end it wasn't a big deal - I just thought it was! The worst thing that happened was that in my interview they asked if we had any plans for me to see a therapist in the US (no we didn't...) and they gave me a conditional approval and I had to have a repeat medical exam within 12 months of arriving in the US. The first I knew about that was when they sent me a RFE for it... but it was even less of a big deal than the original exam! So try not to worry - sometimes we're our own worst enemies...
