Asking Senator / Congressman to expedite F1 visa for a relative (Merged)

I have a close relative who is in 221g for his F1 visa abroad. He is from Russia. Reason for 221g is “sensitive major” - biochemistry. So situation is complicated to say the least and no one knows when this 221g will be finished.

I have recently applied for naturalization. Got my green card a few years ago.

First, will senator / congressman help if I reach out to them to expedite F1 visa approval for relative who is abroad awaiting F1 visa? Second, what are the risks for myself if I reach out to senator / congressman as I do not want complications with my naturalization process. I am from Russia too.

No, they will not intervene in any way with a consular decision or administrative process. Sorry.

Background checks/vetting cannot be expedited anyway.

I suppose you can but do not see what they can do, well the Intern handling your enquiry.

This is a non immigrant visa after all, they could just deny it if pushed.

I am looking at senator’s site: it says I can submit an inquiry for a visitor who is abroad having issues with visa delay. Just need to explain we are relatives

Sure, go for it.   If it is stuck in background checks, that is what they will tell the senator’s office.

There will be very long AP for any Russian citizens for obvious reasons, similar to the reasons why citizens of Muslim countries get long by APs. Currently, Russia uses these “students “ and “tourists “ to spy or push Russian propaganda. This is the matter of national security and there is nothing you can do. Frankly, I don’t blame them. I would do the same. The only entity you can blame for such delays is Russian government.

It is not a very common situation.

Not many students have extended AP

Even fewer would have US relatives.

Thank you. is AP being done in an embassy abroad where F1 visa interview took place or it is processed somewhere in the US (which center)?

That depends on what is being done, for this sort of case my guess is that the Consulate are awaiting for instructions from the US.

Any customer service phone number from DOS or USCIS one can know for me to call and find out a status? I cannot find one.

The Consulate concerned would be the one to contact regarding status.

Non-immigrant visas are processed entirely by the Embassy/DoS. There is no USCIS processing center stateside that is involved.

AP is something the embassy carries out, everyone goes through it but some get more scrutiny than others for various reasons.

I don't see how asking a congressperson about someone else's F-1 application would jeapordize your own naturalization. Unless there's some suspicious connection it seems totally unrelated.
