I read the DailyNK quite often, and just about every story mentions the plight of the regular citizens of the DPRK.  Of course the socialist government is doing nothing to help, but they are spending a lot of money to maintain the Kim dynasty.

Sure, the others being Mongolia and Kazakstan.  The interesting thing is that the DPRK also shares a border with a relatively thriving free society as well which is one of the reasons the CCP keeps supporting it at a minimal level.

 

Here is a recent story from the DailyNK.  Of course given the fact that the sources are few and far between, a lot of the information is a bit dated (usually by a few weeks or a month or two,), and it is often anecdotal, and or opinion.  It does however shed some light into the Hermit Kingdom.

 

N. Hwanghae Province tells new house owners to move in or face punishment

 

In one rural area in Koksan County, workers dug crude pits at a depth of 0.5 meter in the gardens behind houses as a makeshift measure right before residents moved in. Wastewater from the kitchen and bathroom is drained into the pit, but families cannot use water freely for fear the pit will overflow.

 

“For these homes to be livable, individual homeowners have to dig a deeper pit and cover it with a cement lid or build their own sewage system. Some shoddy homes don’t even have the pit, and instead have pipes that run from the kitchen into a nearby ditch. The people there are in horribly unsanitary conditions because of the swarms of flies and maggots,” the source said.

 

Move in or get sent to labor camps

 

Without doing anything to address these issues, the provincial people’s committee is insisting that families move into their new houses before Sept. 9 and even threatening to throw householders into labor camps if they do not move in, the source said. That has apparently aroused grumbling among people left with no choice but to immediately get ready to move into their new houses.

 

“People have strong opinions about being obliged to move into nonfunctional houses, but they basically have to obey orders from officials who are only concerned with getting everyone into their new homes by Sept. 9 regardless of the actual conditions,” the source said.

Gotta love a country that punishes citizens for reactionary (anti-fascist) thought.  From easing and talking to friends in the Great White North, Canada is quickly heading in the same direction.

 

N. Korea hands down severe punishments for watching S. Korean dramas, movies
 

North Korea has recently been increasing the severity of punishments for watching “impure videos” such as South Korean dramas and movies, Daily NK has learned.

 

Speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, a source in North Pyongan Province told Daily NK on Aug. 14 that a man in his twenties living in Cholsan County was sent to a political prison camp in July after being accused of watching South Korean videos. 

 

As it is almost impossible to survive in political prison camps, North Koreans regard being sent to such camps as a death sentence.

The problem is though is that it is communists or in the case of the DPRK, "Juche", that has lead to the deterioration of the quality of life there.  So shouldn't KJU admit his failure first?
