Why am I reminded of the line frmo the first Batman movie:

but their probing the wrong end? I think we need true democracy, and not just a republic. It's not really working all that well anymore.

Huge problem: "true" democracy = mob rule of majority = anarchy.

The republic is because laws are essential to have/maintain a nation.

Half truth. true democracy != anarchy. Majority rule, yes... but again that doesn't equate to lawlessness.

We have gov'ment here that spouts "democracy" all the time.. if that is true.. then why is there no socialist party here? Other countries have them (Germany for one) that is democratic, and enjoys more benefits than here at times. Not always, but at times.

So my question remains... why can we not have democracy? If it's espoused so much on capitol hill??

Firing underlings won't fix what's wrong with this government. It only indicates that they've lost their usefulness to the administration. Bush will hire new and better spin doctors - the illusion of change, while keeping things the same.

America, like most western European countries is not a true democracy - you essentially have a ruling class representing those with the money and influence, and who have the most to gain by perpetuating it. Its an oligarchy - we have the pretense of democracy, the choice between two political parties who are essentially the same, and have much the same interests.

We also don't have real public debate - merely partisan talking points that come in and go out of fashion. Our media typically spins issues into two skewed and contradictary viewpoints that form the political opinions of many people (instead of seeking out the information themselves - proactively). Its not suprising people are so apathetic about politics, everyone has an interest in the outcome of elections yet noone seems to want to fix a system in dire need of reform.
