How can I optimize the time to get a US passport after oath ceremony?

Can I apply on the same day of oath ceremony for passport?

My understanding is that I need to fill out a DS11 form and bring passport photos?

Do I need an appointment? I believe there is a passport office at the Chicago immigration office where they also hold the oath ceremonies. Could I get this done on the same day?

You can apply if you like as soon as you have your Certificate of Naturalization and have US passport photos taken.  The process is outlined on the DoS website and will depend on your location.

You will need:

DS-11

Original Naturalization Certificate

Copy of Naturalization certificate

State ID/Passport

Copy of State ID/Passport

Appropriate Fees

I would start EARLY looking for an available appointment for a slot immediately after taking the oath.

Yes. Some venues have passport agency folks to take your application. Otherwise you can schedule a passport appointment in advance for same day. Caveats:

* some contributors to this web site assert that making a passport appointment before you are U.S. citizen is tantamount to claiming you are a U.S. citizen. I do not agree.

* Some oath ceremonies are long. Mine was 3 hours, as was my wife’s.

Walk ins are theoretically possible.  I haven’t seen one in 20 years.

In that case, it would not surprise me if they take same day passport applications

thanks. So my plan of attack will be to to call for a passport appointment the same day I receive the oath ceremony invite.

Also pay expedited fee. BTW. what payment method is accepted? CC?

This will be interesting with the current general passport backlog. Hard to plan business trips.

P.S. How to I update global entry/TSA Pre? I believe this is linked to my non-US passport number and green card number

Once you have a U.S. passport, bring it  to  a GE enrollment center to upgrade your status.

Your TSA pre is not impacted.

After you naturalize, I suggest to not use GE until you see the GE enrollment center.

What @Mike E said.

Download the Mobile Passport app.  That line at the airport is usually shorter than the regular line.  Any line is annoying when you have had the luxury of TT though!

The major airports also have "appointment on arrival" for the trusted traveler programs, so you can hypothetically come in through regular immi and go straight to the appointment line and update your TT account.  I did it that way in May.

I  got notified today for a case change. Turns out that my oath ceremony got scheduled for Sept 7th in Chicago.

I called immediately the passport number. However, they told me that I can't schedule an appointment yet. I gave them a  (real) travel date for Oct 15th. They schedule in a 4 week window. They also told me that it takes 11 weeks to get the passport. So, I don't understand...

Anyhow, I wonder what travel date I should claim to get an appointment on Sept 7th. Or other method?

If you have imminent, required travel, you need your naturalization certificate in hand before you can call DOS and request an urgent passport service.  The travel has to be in less than 3-5 weeks.  You need to have proof of international travel - itinerary and confirmation number with the airline, hotel accommodation, etc.  Be prepared - you could have to travel to somewhere in the US to attend the appointment and stay a day or 2 until you can pick the passport up after printing.  There are no guarantees the appointment will be local.

Expedited passports are taking 3-5 weeks these days, regular passports about 10 weeks.

Requesting urgent service shouldn't be done unless you actually have confirmed travel plans that must be attended to.  Just wanting a passport for the sake of having it in hand doesn't qualify.  I had urgent travel for work which allowed me to obtain and urgent passport, but it wasted essentially 2 days of my life sitting in the passport offices.  We planned my kids' travel so I will be applying for their passports now that they are finished travel for the year.
