About an hour NE of Lubbock.

Ah, central Panhandle.  I'm guessin' Floydada.  Close?  The DMV people will probably inspect your husband's Costa Rican driver's license with great interest, as a novelty.

A little off the topic, but in 2002 or 2003 I flew to Amarillo, drove through Dalhart to Clayton, NM, then due east down the Oklahoma Panhandle (bucket-list item).  Note to self and others:  Do not drive even one mile per hour over the speed limit in or near Guymon, Okla.

Anyway, let us know how your mission turns out.

Just a note about the SS card...

I know your spouse checked the box saying you wish a SS card - we did, too, but the immigration system doesn't always play nice with the Social Security system.  When a new immigrant is processed, the processing officer needs to check a box on his/her screen that sends the data to the Social Security office requesting a card.  This does not always happen - and since your husband got through so fast, there might be a chance that this step was missed.  When my spouse came in (we flew together to JFK), we both went to secondary together, and I made special mention that we had checked the box for a SS card to be generated (because someone on Visa Journey had suggested we make this "special mention").  Didn't happen.

If you have not gotten the card within two weeks, then go to your local SS office.  If you go earlier, and the SSN is already in process, then it can really confuse the person at the SS office desk.

At one point a few years ago, you had only a 50-50 chance of the card being automatically generated through the system.  Somehow I doubt this has improved.

Best of luck to you and yours!

Ok perfect. There is a SS office close to my house so we can go there this week. Preparing myself for that craziness and long wait. Haha. Yes, I was wanting his SS card before we leave to my mothers in the Panhandle for 2 weeks because the DMV in my hometown is super small and of course I know everyone. So wanted to take care of that while visiting there. So hopefully we will get the SS card before we leave on the 26th of August. Thank you so much for your kind help!

Don't show up at the SSA first thing in the morning.  I remember going there with my wife (fiancé at the time entered on a K1) first thing, and had a two hour wait.  When she got her GC from AOS I was more strategic, and we showed up around 1:30p, and had a less than 5 minute wait.

Good Luck!

  • 2 months later...

Well, today has been 90 days since my husband entered on his CR1 visa and they still have not sent his green card. I have the receipt number from paying the immigration fee, which the status of that just says July 1 immigration fee was paid. I was going to submit an inquiry on a missing card but, I have no idea what form this would be. I could choose 485 but he did not apply within the USA he entered on his visa.  Has anyone else had this happen?

I called USCIS a month ago and since it had not been 90 days since entry they would not tell me anything but did say he was in the queue for biometrics which makes no sense at all. So lost and confused at this point. Any help is appreciated.

We were able to get his social security card at least - but, had to go to the SS office to request it. At least that’s finished.

So I finally got an agent on the phone…what a mess….apparently they have scheduled him for a biometrics appointment that he just complete before they will process the green card. I do not know why on earth that was not done at the POE. So, he said a letter was mailed to us 10/20/23 and that his appointment is for 11/07/23.  I wonder what else can go wrong with our case….makes no sense at all. I’m so so frustrated. I wish I knew how or who to complain too - knowing it will do no good at all.

Before you know it, it will be time to deal with them ALL over again to remove conditions.

Well, this information is a lot more specific than most people get, so at least you know.

For ROC, take every piece of evidence physically coming in that indicates your shared life together, and throw it into a box.  Do the same thing digitally in a computer folder.  By ROC time, you'll have a smorgasbord of evidence to support the filing.

In addition (actually, before anything), shop for a lawyer who can draft wills, medical & financial powers of attorney, and similar estate documents.  These make superlative evidence for ROC, and they're even more crucial to have in "life."  Remember that if you move from one U.S. state to another, your Will may need to be redone.
