I do file my taxes everywhere year. The correct answer was that I will not be double tax in Japan and the US. I was more concern about being double tax because Japan already takes a big chunk of my salary and I was worried that the US will take it's cut because I will stay more than 30 days in the US....but that will not be the case.

My other question. For form 2555, do I have to do bona fide residence or physical presence test?

You can do either. I don't know how long you've lived in Japan though and how long you've been filing the 2555. What do you usually write?
But, I suggested: physical presence test and write the dates from October 2022- October 2023.

Don't forget your wife will also have to file taxes and she should also complete form 2555. She can choose bona fide or physical presence.

Seems simpler to claim the foreign tax credit.

I usually use the bona fide residence.

I'm guessing the physical presence test is if I'm outside the USA for more than 330 days? Since I was only in Guam for 2 days and I was outside the United States for 363 days from October 2022 to October 2023. I'm guessing the physical presence test will work?

Personal choice. We used physical presence for previous filings because we wanted to show USC never abandoned US residency and time in Korea was considered “temporary” . But, it didn’t really make a difference in the end as CO still required we show proof USC petitioner had strong intentions to return to US.
