One of the trusted traveller programs for quick re-entry to USA.

I have Global Entry too, but it never helped me boarding planes without showing GC and extension letter.

 

Was there CBP preclearance at the departure airport @nerdcouple?

I am also surprised that an airline would actually not verify the travel documents.

You have to show original, it's watermarked.

You can try showing a copy and be lucky. But if you're not lucky, you won't board a plane.

I was always told the original was needed for CBP although my wife did usually show the original to the airline staff as well, but sometimes a copy.

Make a couple of copies, one time my wife was asked by an airline clerk to keep it, my wife gave her a copy as you definitely should show the original to CBP to avoid needing to go to secondary inspection.
