I don't see a problem with "dating up" so long as everyone understands what's involved and there's no games being played. The games are the grossest part of this, to me at least.

The problem in modern times is when professional women who have done well in their own right still seek to "marry up" -- the prospect pool is limited, and it's constricted further when the rich dudes consider the benefits of coupling with a 25-year-old versus with a 39-year-old whose biological clock is deafening and who's probably seeking her first real relationship after spending her earlier years building her life professionally.

It would be nice if we could all begin relationships due entirely to love. In Jane Austin's time it was complex, in that women were expected to be a certain way, were still largely 'property', and sheltered the burden of their entire family's well being, status, and titles. Female characters in Austin's books are often in desperate circumstances but resistant to the idea of 'marrying up'. The happy endings are cliche in that not only do they find a man that loves them, but they are usually rich too. Unless you married 'well' a woman would be homeless, a disgraced prostitute, or in the poorhouse if she did not have a secure financial future. A woman would also have been outcast if she tried to marry a man of a 'lower class' or station. Women of today have the ability to choose the man they are looking for. Regardless of if the man is rich or poor, or somewhere in between, they should make responsible choices. How much money a man has, has never been a major concern of mine. There are plenty of men and women that enter into those type of relationships, I'm never sure how much love is there, but to each their own I guess.

Austen's books only covered a small strata of society, what may be called the 1% in current terminology. Actually very few were in desperate circumstances relative to the general population.

 

I just find it interesting that despite the best attempts some innate factors do not change, so there is an inevitable clash.

 

 Obviously the discussion here is about the norm, I would never suggest it applies to everyone, very little does.

 

The story was from the Guardian, super Progressive, I often see this contradiction, is this not what you wanted?, well of course there are other impacts. I could fill this thread with supportive Tik Tok videos. And of course numerous studies from Dating Apps.

 

I am more interested in the well I was going to call them side effects but maybe they will be seen as major effects in the future. There are always consequences and this is unchartered territory, how those consequences will pan out, there have been surprises, more to come.
